Sorry, but the first thing that came to mind was ... "African swallow or European swallow?"  :D

Hmm... go away, or I shall
taunt you a second time...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Ian, the gates in your drawing won't work unless the arms can stretch as the servo moves them open. :D  Even if they stretched, they wouldn't open nowhere close to 90 degrees (which is usually needed).
I had planned on a sleeve on the wire from the gates, so it moves with the throw. But yeah, the others that everyone else posted work better.

The recently-late Wulfgang Dudler had a nifty set of operating gates on his Westport Terminal layout.

And he did it again on his Diamond Valley module:

It's Horrible Oversized but works

That was the one I was thinking of and couldn't remember where I had seen it. Didn't know he recently passed. I always liked viewing his layout online and YouTube.

What type of gates would these be in real life?

Wouldn't they typically open one at a time (or be opened one at a time by a foreman or brakeman)?

some times I find I have an image spring to mind...
I have to try to share it.

Put the gates onto solinoids to activate them
and use springs to return them.
put a red button on the facia

Use the  button to clear the loco off the rails!

a loco as a pinball.
realism be damned.

aaaaand  back to my day job.

a R/C servo seems a good idea to me....
a long arm. servo output in the center.
one gate on one arm end and the other gate on the other arm.
the servo arm is the center of the Z

Could be. But there are also sliding and swing gates that are automatic as well.

One of our customers has a swing gate that is activated by a push button from a box by the spur entry. Box is locked with our switch lock.
