Started boosterizing a naked RS-3 shell. Not going to get nuts with lots of detail, just blanking out the obvious stuff.

A few weeks ago, I got a great deal on a pair of Kato D&H PA-1's and, while I don't model the D&H, I just had to have 'em.... you know the feeling! :D I've been kinda keeping my eyes out for a D&H caboose but, no soap.  A week ago, at a train show, I found some old Northeastern Decals for D&H cabeese so, I bought them and an Atlas WV caboose to convert to D&H.  A friend sent me a url of a site devoted to D&H cabeese and doing some research for lettering, color, etc., I discovered a rather unique caboose design on the D&H and decided I really, really had to have that one, too.  So, the photos show the converted Atlas WV buggy, the D&H buggy that caught my eye, and two pics of the bash I did this week-end.  I used some modelers license for want of exact measurements but, close enough for me.  I used the running gear, frame, cupola, and end hardware from a Life Like north eastern caboose.  I scratched the body of the buggy from Evergreen styrene.  Somewhere around this place I have a nice little jig from Robert Ray for forming grab irons but, to you think I can find it????  The grabs will come later.

Why not make it a cabless unit? Instead of blanking out the cab windows.

M.C. F - Are the culvert tubes the plastic wire covering tubes used
in automotive wiring?

Got that plastic corrugated tubing at Radio Shack.
I think it's to bundle wires.
It's got a split down the middle, and it's actually spiraled, so I slid the two halves a bit to line up concentric before CA'ing in place.

Max: thanks for the kind words.
I hope one day I can build some steam like you!
Dang.  Seems like I just touch a loco and it starts to fall apart on me.

Unittrain:  You can brush on stain.
There might be some off-color spots where the glue blobs out of the joints but that's nothing some weathering powder can't fix.
However, if you're planning on creating some peeled-pant effects, then I suggest spray painting the entire structure with a light- or medium-grey primer, let dry, then spray-paint with the color of your choice.
Weather with powders / stain, and then take a wire brush or sandpaper to the outer layer to expose the primer:

Of course, Tom Mann is the weathering expert here.
The salt method might work well, too, depending on the type of structure and type of peel you want.

And just to prove that the Shoofly bridge-building scene is moving along:

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

The signal replacement effort continues... This mast is ready for painting and will replace the eastbound home signal at SPRUCE Interlocking.

Dave,
These are Akem, right? Went to their site and they are sold out (I thought Pennsy doesn't sell). Reasonable price at $17 a throw.

Oh, oops! I thought I had included a link to what it is but evidently not.

Lots of Hobby time this weekend but not lots of modeling.

On Friday, Railwire master photographer Tim Horton came over in the morning to shoot some potential cover shots which will hopefully grace a mag in the next 12 months. I then hosted two visitors from the States who ran trains for a couple of hours.  In the evening Gary Hinshaw and I went to operate on a beautiful HO rendition of the CPR's Kettle valley Coquihalla sub as part of Trains 2012.

Saturday: I toured the show and made a presentation on the C&W at Trains: lessons learned and lots of photos .

Sunday: yet another day at Trains and yet another presentation.  Then I hosted Jeff Briggs of Briggs Models for a short visit and back to Trains for the dinner (where I won a Microtrains heavy weight CPR sleeper in the draw...yippee!).  Back home and finished off weathering two sets of units (below).

The family is home from Ottawa tomorrow so hobbyng will come to an end for a while.

Pictures of the 6 locos and a handful of the dozen cars I weathered this week are below.

Have a great week!

And it all makes sense now...looks like it would be an easy cabless unit to model, or is it a slug?

Depending on your level of  :ashat: or  :tommann: you may want to consider a gravel ford in the creek to allow the dozer to access the other side or the now gone and much lamented centre bents or at least a heap of mud and tracks in and out of the creek.

Looks fantastic btw.

These days I have heaps of time thanks to being finished uni for the year (and possibly forever if I can land a decent job) but my employers don;t want to give me the extra hours that would translate into extra money for trains. Did buy some HO stuff this week.

The A-4 is painted now, minus the white stripes, white rimed wheels, and Decaling. I've started to use "Citidel" paints lately, witch I really like. It's the paints that the warhammer 40k guys use. Their isn't any "railroad" colors, but the basic colors are pretty damn good.

Also, for the few NP guys here, did all the steamers have the same red oxide/boxcar red color cab roofs? or only the large locos?

Now this is bold for me to claim I'm an "NP guy", but the G-1 and G-2
0-8-0 switchers (a.k.a. the Walthers 0-8-0)  had the red oxide cab roof.  I recall asking Andrew Hegstad about it.   I don't know if ALL
NP steam had it.

They are.  I bought them 5 years ago and just never got around to building them.

I got to operate at the last session of the Kade Railroad, Dave Skinner's layout, http://home.comcast.net/~dskinner1/. Hopefully parts of his layout will live on elsewhere in South Jersey,

Nothing to show again, but this week I actually started attaching some feeders to the rails on my sectional shelf layout, and wired up a bus wire on the right sections. There's still trackwork to finish yet, so that section will still need more feeders yet later. All the feeders I've drilled and installed on the right section have been soldered in place and connected to the bus wires, the middle section has feeders dropped for each rail but not yet soldered or connected, and the left section still needs to be done.

Just a slug, they replaced the innards with concrete, then wired the traction motors to the C424's on both ends. I recently collected a couple Centurys so building the slug seemed like it would be a fun little project. As soon as I quit trying to plug the windows with styrene and instead just glued the 'glass' in place and puttied over the top it got quite easy  :D
