Seems odd, since EXR has all of those roof variations in HO (Stanray diagonal, X-panel, P-S bow-tie) and they went with the bow-tie variation on all of the HO releases, including every deco scheme and road number released in the N batch. 

Also, I don't recall seeing any P-S prototypes with an X-panel roof.  All of the FVM and IMRC modern P-S models have the bow-tie roof.

I just found four Athearn undec NACC boxcar kits at an online shop in Iowa for $9 each, two PS-door/PS-roof version and two Superior-door/Stanray-roof version.  I cleaned them out to get the parts, and I will get one of the PS-roofs cast in polyurethane resin so there will be enough to share.

In the mean time, does someone have a roof-shot photo of the prototype, so we can confirm/debunk the X-panel variation?  Never mind, as Jason has confirmed the bow-tie roof with photos on the TB thread.

Not trying to contradict anyone but ER over on TB says the car is correct for most deliveries.

I think Blaine got some bad info and his next post will read quit different.

I also wanted to add that based on some conversations I had a while back with some EXR employees, I wouldn't be surprised if someone is getting their a$$ chewed right now for this.  I don't think this was a cost cutting measure but rather just a big mistake.  I also wouldn't be surprised if they look into fixing this some how even though the cost will probably preclude it.

I bought a dozen Undec Kits some time ago because you got both roof variations.  If you have no need for the Diagonal Panel roof variation Bryan, I could sure use 4 more.
Or, if you wanted to cast those, that would be great.  I tried one time, but the thin profile of the overhanging roof eave molded well, but did not cast worth a darn.
I think I needed a thinner viscosity resin.

Clearly, I misspoke in my response. The model should have the bowtie style roof, as mentioned by Jason.

We are committed to offering the most accurate models, and I believe that we can offer a solution. We will tool a new roof and make it available free of charge to those who purchased the N-scale P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car. As you would expect, it will take a few weeks to have this ready, and so we will make an announcement for the roof when we have finished cutting the molds and running the plastic parts. With this announcement, we will give more information about how one would contact us for the replacement roof.

For those of you who have sought an N-scale bowtie-style roof for scratchbuilding projects, we will also make the roof available to purchase on our website.

Thank you, Jason, but even more importantly, thank you, Mr. Hadfield and ExactRail.  For ER to admit its mistake and offer to rectify the matter at its own expense (and in just a few weeks' time!) makes this a non-issue to me.  Hopefully, the ER bashing can stop here.

Well there will be glue, but if it's anything like the Gunderson 5200, the roof will still pop off.  You just need to create a small gap and slide your fingernail along the edge.  The only problem would be if there was excess glue. The tab that holds the roof on is very, very small.  Actually it's so small I don't know if it would hold the roof without glue.  S I don't think there will be many issues.

I think Blaine just saved the day. Now lets see if we really get those roofs.

They have been doing a lot of upgrades - metal wheels, their own trucks, body mounted couplers. So it would be great to see them fix these so quickly. It shows comitment. I like that.

It takes a lot of balls to admit your wrong and the product needs fixing. He could have just told us we were holding it wrong.

Now that the EXR bow-ties will be available separately, I might get the Stanray diagonals cast.  But it's possible that EXR will make all of its roofs available, which would include the Stanray roofs on the PC&F Southern Pacific hi-cube boxcar.  We'll see how it goes.

Nope, I'm good.  I've got enough X-panel roofs to last a while, and I'll have two more when ExR ships the P-S replacement roofs.

I use the Stanray diagonals also, which is why I probably will cast the Athearn version eventually if ExR doesn't release their version separately.  We reminds me, I have a diagonal from when I replaced the BN Gunderson roof with an X-panel, now I just have to remember where it is.

I think the tooling on the Athearn roofs blow the ExR roofs away by a wide margin.  I would love to have more of the Athearn roofs than the 12ea. that I at one time ended up with and am quickly exhausting.
The other advantage of the Athearn roof is that it is tooled specifically for a car with overhanging roof eaves.
