What former New York Central trackage does NS own?  They have trackage rights over the West Shore Line, but it's not theirs.  What former Lackawanna trackage does NS own?  They use the former Erie lines to go west through Port Jervis into northern PA, and the Pennsy route through southern PA.

As Lou said about the NYC. Then you have to add the Old Michigan Central Detroit-Chicago line although they've been trying to sell it off. Add to that the old Big 4 Cincinnati-Columbus line and Marion-Goshen line, The ex Toledo&Ohio Central's southend from Columbus to Charleston.

Like I said, I can't say that licensing didn't have any play in the decision BUT I know for a fact that they tried to cover railroads whose lines they bought or built and operated on at sometime. IF they do or did operate on an ex-NH line it would be on some kind of trackage rights or haulage agreements, but it's not apparent to me which lines it is. Nothing against the New Haven at all Bryan, I'm just telling what I know. If you want to be argumentative about it, that's your problem.

Here is the description of the original S&A paint scheme... courtesy of Bill Schafer and the Southern Railway List at Yahoo! Groups...

"They were dark green, with yellow "wings" on the nose.  The company logo was comprised of stainless steel letters and borders, with a red background -- small logo on nose and rear, and a large logo under each cab window."

Thanks for that picture Jerry. That is the first time I have ever seen an S&A loco in any scheme other than the bLack one. It would look cool on a Heritage Unit.

I've heard the rumor also, although it came from no one who would know. They did substitute the TA&G fro N&S, so IF they did more, TA&G would be back in. I doubt NH would come back as NS does not own or operate on the ex-NH lines. Could also do EL, P&WV and W&LE. After that you would REALLY have to do some digging.
I believe the extant P&WV, W&LE and AC&Y routes are now operated by the new Wheeling & Lake Erie.

And here is probably the only color shot on the web (very hard to find anything on the S&A on the web)...

The S&A tuxedo black scheme is an unusual choice since it was wore by the eleven GP35s for approximately 6 years.  Around 1970-1971 lettering was changed to have Southern lettering with "S&A" sublettering and the addition of the "wheels on rails" heralds on both ends.
I stand informed, thank ya sir...and dang I wish NS had picked that scheme, I think the wings would have flowed well, and the logo would probably have fit very well in that huge space under the cab windows

And then there are the DEFUNCT predecessors like the Blue Ridge Railroad of South Carolina  (the Stumphouse Tunnel Route...)

NS should also be doing at least one Tug boat in each CNJ, PC, PRR, EL, Erie, LV and DL&W....

Seriously, it's a great program, as Andy has said, it would be nice to see them come out of coal country someday....

Very true and the W&LE and Iowa Interstate are my 2 favortite regionals now! I would love to see them do those roads and NH and TAG, but that is still just a whole lot more rumor than fact and until we hear something more substantive, I'm skeptical about it.

I thought I read in Trains a couple of years ago that NS had pulled the plug on operations in southern Ontario...

What former New York Central trackage does NS own?  They have trackage rights over the West Shore Line, but it's not theirs.  What former Lackawanna trackage does NS own?  They use the former Erie lines to go west through Port Jervis into northern PA, and the Pennsy route through southern PA.

According to Wikipedia, these current roads own and operate over former NYNH&H trackage: Bay Colony, Central New England, Connecticut Southern, CSX, Housatonic Railroad, Massachusetts Coastal, Naugatuck, Norfolk Southern, Pan Am Railways, Providence and Worcester.

It seems to be somewhat of a stretch on roads being chosen based on current trackage when they are including roads in the Heritage program that were predecessors of predecessors of predecessors.  More than likely, NS realized after the initial announcement that CONNDOT owns the rights to the "New Image" scheme, and it would make far more sense to use the New Haven scheme that ushered in the corporate modern graphics era rather than the dated script herald scheme.

Isn't NS a partner in Pan Am Southern? That would make them part owner of some former NH lines?

As far as I know, Norfolk Southern was never involved in CASO, which was the Michigan Central/New York Central Systems line from Buffalo to Windsor, across from Detroit.  All or pretty much all the equipment was Michigan Central/New York Central Systems.  The Canadian National and Canadian Pacific ended up in control of CASO, and they have let it pretty much fade away.

After 1898, the Wabash had trackage rights on first the Grand Trunk and then the Canadian National from Windsor to Buffalo, and I think that the Norfolk Southern still has those rights and uses them, at least to some degree.  So, maybe there is a case to be made for a heritage locomotive in Canadian National livery, but somehow, I don't think that is likely to happen.

The Wabash used its own equipment, based in Canada
