The 1005 slug started out as:

Then renumbered to:

While you're at it Bryan, see if you can tool a better fuel/air tank set-up for those dimensionless Atlas RS units...oh and maybe one for the VO-1000's too. 

He should use the RSD-12 tank.  It's better detailed, and Atlas still has them in stock.  They are the Japan versions, so they have to be modified slightly to fit the China chassis.

I couldn't get the links to load.  What type of EMD trucks went under the 1005?  I'm still a novice at identifying stuff like that, but I'm getting better with more research and reading  I saw some early pictures that still had the original trucks, but by time it made it to the CR Q scheme, they must have changed already.  The pics I have in the Q scheme don't show the trucks really well, so it's hard to see them.

He should use the RSD-12 tank.  It's better detailed, and Atlas still has them in stock.  They are the Japan versions, so they have to be modified slightly to fit the China chassis.

My next order with Atlas and that'll get taken care of.  Easy fix... now about the truck change...

Use Atlas EMD GP trucks, also available through the parts dept.  Just make sure that the country of manufacture is the same as the frame you kitbashed (Japan or China) so that the gearing matches.  If your original model was made in Japan, you also can use Kato old-mechanism F3/F7 trucks.

CORRECTION - I see from your progress log that you removed the motor and gearing.  So any Atlas or Kato GP truck from the Atlas/Kato era, or from the Atlas China GP30 and GP35 should work fine.

Don't think I need to worry about the gears matching unless the part that holds it into the frame is different... 

This is one of the China RS-11's, but there's no motor involved since I couldn't figure out how to keep it and still chop it low enough to fit the shell.  Since they are going to be confined to yard work, the SD38 (Kato) can handle the heavy lifting.

Brian,

Be aware that EMD B-trucks are different depending on the era of unit.  GP38 trucks for example are different than GP38-2 trucks.  When I kitbashed a Kato GP38-2 into a GP38 years ago, I had to swap in F3 trucks.  In any event, Atlas has both so you just have to order the correct set.  Those trucks look like pre -2 trucks in Chris' photo above.

1 - Has anybody seen a slug with the hood off ?

There is a cool picture of the inside of one of the Milwaukee Road's slugs built from an F-unit in the Hyde and Sanders Milwaukee Road Diesel Power book. According to the caption they welded old freight car axles to the floor and then covered them with diamond plate. Added some more sand boxes. The traction motors blowers are on the floor (off course). Other than that a nice open box.
