Who, what when, where....ID these boxcars

Can anyone shed some light on these two cars; one MT one Roundhouse, both appearing to be a model of the same kind of box car. Who made the prototypes, what were they used for, what roads had these and what era would they have been found in ?



Any help or references appreciated ( I have a wack of undecs and for the life of me don't know where I got em or why....)  :facepalm:

I think they're FMC cars - and a large number were sold to Railbox as the ABOX fleet.  A lot of them in turn went to CN - with CNA reporting marks.

Athearn has re-released this car in both CN, CNA and ABOX schemes.

As to accuracy, who knows!

Yep, basically just Railbox (ABOX), and Canadian National (CNA) in secondhand ownership.

Leave it to the CN hater to have a bunch of basically CN only boxcars....what's next; the Leafs lose to rhe Rangers..........wait a minute................... :-X

Technically they're ABOX-only.

Railbox is the only original owner. CN got a bunch of the ABOX cars secondhand in 1985. I think that's a little after your timeframe.

You can always do up a bunch of Railbox cars for general service or pulp/scrap paper/boxboard/whatever service out of your paper mill. These nice clean 50' cars would have been popular for that.

The real high quality paper rolls probably would have been kept to restricted service cars to ensure quality clean cars.

That's the theory...high quality rolls = clean load only cars...right; that's the theory.....I beg to differ.......having found everything from track spikes sticking through a nailable floor and chewing the bottom out of a roll of 42lb bleached white to the bumper from an AMC Pacer being used to block a roll of kraft linerboard I have always found the "clean loading only" concept for roll stock almost as funny as the one about the guy from Revenue Canada telling you he's here to "help you".....

I'm thinking the Puddington Valley got a deal on some ex Railbox cars.......sigh............... :|

I'm pretty sure the SPC railroad had a bunch of these cars.
