My RS-10 and RS-18 locomotives have returned to service with new TCS M4 decoders and independent front and rear lighting installed by my friend Dave Mackinnon at www.detailsnscale.com.  Here is RS-10 581 with 584 trailing:

No modeling this week - the teenagers were here for spring break so we did. Lot of dad-daughter stuff. And tomorrow we'll do Zeaster as a full family for the first time in about 5 years.

Thank you Sir , looking forward to have that arm pain free while I model , it was 10-18-2010 when I tore it fairly bad , 3.8 and 1.8 cm's ,  in 2 places .

Well, after a too-long absence, I am back with news.  My harebrained ideas are coming to life!  Construction began this week on what will become the Pennsylvania Railroad!  My parents were in town, and I managed to recruit a little help from a friend, so we got a fair amount of work done.  Construction began with the peninsula that will hold Newark on one side and Panther Creek on the other.



It seemed like we spent quite a bit of time problem solving, or even just generally brainstorming about the best way to do things.  One solution that we came up with that I felt was somewhat creative was the supports for the staging level along the south wall.  We could have done this with legs and more conventional table construction, but the techniques that we used for the staging level can be directly translated to the lower level 7 inches above, as well as the upper level.



And by that night, most of the base for staging was in, as were supports for the other two levels.  I find it somewhat ironic that we began construction with the staging level, which is the area that received the least design attention of all.  We decided to do staging for two reasons.  First, parts of the lower level are going to have to be supported off of the staging level.  Second, laying track is going to be a heck of a lot easier without the lower level creating severe vertical space constraints.



And of course, a great big thanks to my faithful cleanup servant.

I started playing with a Nn3 2-6-0. Stock Z scale Marklin's are kind of fast even if you get one with a 5 pole motor. Plus the gear ratio is only 26:1. So I put in a new motor and gave it a higher ratio. I used a 6volt 6x12mm motor that usually mounts like this:

But i inverted it, then milled a well into the frame to sink the motor down. Next I soldered 2 tubes together to mount a lay shaft to the motor:




With the new reduction the ratio is now 83.7:1. I tested it in my hand and it runs smooth, can't wait to see it going down rails.
