I've wanted a ten wheeler for a long time so started my first ever major steam bash this weekend.

Here are the humble beginnings of what will hopefully be Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 #1062.
It's a chopped Atlas Pacific shortened by more than a cab length.

Not too sure about that cab number.  I got some used shells off the 'bay and it was already decaled on.
Maybe the previous owner was Tommy Tutone? ;D

Thanks David, and Tom! I guess it isn't too bad, and getting compliments from you two, I guess I am just being hard on myself. My complaint is that I am limited to either my Canon A70, or my wife's camera, which is just an upgraded A70. This photo was taken with my 3.2 mp Canon. I am just unhappy that I don't have something that would give me some more play, and less color noise.

Rich - what ISO, shutter speed and F-stop are you shooting at?  An A70 should be able to produce the fineness you are seeking and not tempt you to acquire other equipment.

really good stuff here from this weekend.  i have been dogged by a cold for the past 2 weeks and it is finally letting up.  nothing like hacking up a lung.

i overcame a major obstacle regarding the benchwork - how to modify the benchwork to support the added lobes.  the answer is cantilevers.  that and ball bearings, it's all ball bearings these days.  i 'm going to have 6" risers from the grid benchwork holding up a 1x2 that supports the subroadbed.  i just need to make sure i don't want to put a turnout motor where a cantilever is located.  things are happening on the L&HR, albeit slower than i would like.  

in other news, i have a 5'x1' piece of bench work that will not be used.  i've decided to use that as the foundation for a switching layout that will be stored under the layout.  the plan will be based loosely on the Gum Stump and Snowshoe:



gotta have something to do while i wait for the Atlas curved turnouts

and yes, it could be part of a oNeTrak layout at some point...

70-tonner post

As some of you may know, the Modesto & Empire Traction, a shortline in
California, is retiring their venerable GE 70-tonners, in order to qualify
for a tax credit in purchasing their new Gensets.

These great little locos are little photographic gems.

Despite a severe lack of time for any railfanning or photography, I had a
hot tip recently and heard that the Modesto & Empire Traction GE
70-tonner #608 would be making her way east, on a local Santa Fe freight out of
Kingman, heading into Crozier Canyon.

The local was on a siding, and I was able to grab a couple
before she left town.





I was lucky, I hi-tailed into Crozier Canyon, and got some shots coming and going:








I got a quick movie clip hanging from the lip of the canyon, way up in the air, and put it here into a YouTube:

I hope someone was able to catch the GE 70-tonner on her next leg of her trip?!

That M&ET GE 70-tonner was a beautiful sight. Sad to see her go.

Just finishing up some laser cutting for Tom and put together a shallow version of the National Orange Company packing plant in Riverside Ca.  I have a number of Reefers and some older SP Switchers I want to display in a shelf switching layout for shows and home running.  Normally I use 1/32 ply, but this time used 1/32 bass planks and the effect was quite nice.
