Richie:

What did you use for the aluminum paint on your trailers?  Mine are approaching the painting stage.

Tim

I used Mike Skibbe's latest silver method on the GM&O trailer the other silver ones were OEM . The method was used by Skytop35 a few weeks ago and was explained on The Railwire .

First black
Then a few coats of Alclad II Lacquer Chrome ALC 107
Then Model Master Sealer for Metalizer
Then decals
Then Model Master Sealer for Metalizer
And lastly Dullcoat on the model and my whole hand .

The method was talked about here

I know that most who use Alclad to simulate metal on railroad models prefer the chrome, but I like the stainless steel better.  Same procedure as above, minus the dullcoat at the end.  I also specifically use Alclad's black, which I've found to be thinner and more glossy than other brands.

Nice pics guys .. whats sad is that this is the most photogenic part of my layout  :'(

It might be the only photogenic section of the layout, but the subject is great!

Eulogy for Pliny Holt, MMR and a great N scaler

For those of you who know who he was, I thought you would want to know:

Pliny Holt, MMR, and a great N scaler, passed away peacefully
at the age of 99, at home on Monday January 4th.

Those of us newer to N scale railroading would know Pliny's layout
through this N Scale Railroad feature done by Bernie Kempinski
back in (date):

Sad news indeed. He will be missed.

The thing that stuck out for me in Pliny Holt's obituary link was that his father and grandfather invented the caterpillar track and founded the Holt Equipment company, which of course eventually became the Caterpillar Tractor company.  That's kind of a big thing around here.

And then throw in all of Pliny's accomplishments and that he was also a Master Modeler.  Times like these are sad but they also inspire me to do better at my work and at my modeling.  Pliny Holt was simply a great man.

As for the weekend update- I spent most of the last week chasing snow plow trucks around the county, and I also nabbed some nice snow shots in the process.  On the layout I've started staging the cars and the car cards for the first op session.  It's almost here......
