Tom, I think most of those grain hatches are fiberglass, ie they don't rust.  The harware would be rusty given the condition of the rest of the car, but not the hatches themselves.

To add to that, when hatches are replaced, they may be a completely different color.

I've been painting a backdrop for a major bridge crossing on my lower deck.  I have finished the background hills and will be moving towards the foreground features next. The benchwork is really narrow here so I am spending a lot of time making a dramatic backdrop to make sure the scene has as much visual  depth as possible.  Its based on a prototype so i have plenty of photos for reference.

The scene is 6" wide and currently contains a mockup bridge structure (which is what the photos are taped too)

Tim is doing the Pine River bridge on the Dawson Creek Subdivision.  I am modeling the Peace River bridge on the neighboring Fort St. John Subdivision.  The bridges are virtually identical in design.  The Peace River bridge is longer than the Pine River bridge and is also not as high.   I will be kitbashing the bridge trusses using a large number of Central Valley through-truss kits

I did notice (on our brief walk to the liquor store) that the overpass that connects to Reagan International happens to still have insulators underneath, from when the yard was still electrified.
