Weekend Update - 11-22-2009

I just finished up these this weekend.  Not prototypical, but I like what I like in this case.... : ;D

I feel silly telling on myself, but during the decaling process, I got the cabs screwed up. 3468 was supposed to be the NS number.  It's not a simple change either because the NS model is a nose headlight version and the HLCX is the cab headlight.... ooops.... :-\

Gah, why are there Rapidos on my layout?

Unfortunately, I have finally found a model that really dislikes that 9.25" radius curve.  The HHP-8 does fine, but the Acela Express slows to a crawl and the end business car jumps the tracks.  I need that new room!

PS - Anyone who wants an HHP-8, MB Klein is having a sale.  $50!

Nothing worth taking pictures of this week--I've been making up a whole bunch of sidewalk and curbing pieces for my bridge module. The hope is that, once I get all the little bits made up, the process of assembling them with the road section will go quickly.

All the books and magazines talk about how scenery is easy and sloppy and imprecise and "you can't make a mistake." So why is it that when I try to do scenery, I end up having to measure things in thousandths of an inch?

Apparently I'm not doing scenery, I'm doing scratchbuilt structures that just happen to be 18 actual inches long and six scale inches tall...

Got a lot done this weekend, for starters I got the GPW out for a bit for a holiday charity event (www.thegobblefest.com). Also in doing some work on the GPW I found I might have a headgasket blown which is no big deal just a bummer. Otherwise I was able to determine what I'll need for the full restore next summer.  

Finished converting the Walthers bridge to a completely concrete styled bridge and also got it painted. I also painted BYR's Tool Car (an MT RPO), just have to make decals now. And to finish up the week I started decaling LRV GP-20's.

A great week and weekend for me model RR wise.  On Saturday I ran at Bruce Faulkner’s CSX Shenandoah Division.  This layout runs as well as any layout in any scale.  There will be an article in MRP2010.  Until then see more here:

Installed a few decoders in engines we got at Trainfest so we could run them at our club open house this weekend.
Also installed a decoder and lighting in one of the Erie Builts I painted a few years ago. We programmed one of the LEDs for a Mars light which worked well.
I shot a fuzzy video of the engine and effect but haven't a clue as to how to post it. ???

I made some major progress on my layout this week by roughing in the final landforms.  In the first picture below, which was posted last Sunday, you can see the far corner of the layout had a cut in both corners.  But once that was completed, something just bothered me.  I then realized that the layout seemed to have a dome in the middle.  As the second photograph shows, I solved this by continuing a ridge off the far corner and adding a tunnel.  Not only should this make the layout more interesting to railfan, but this should also make it seem larger.  As you can see, the road has also been roughed in since last week.  In case you were wondering, I was smart enough to ballast the track in the tunnel before gluing the roof on.  ;D

My first contribtion to Weekend Update.  I don't model the Rio Grande, but I bought this bumblebee MDC 2-8-0 at a Timonium Show for forty bananas.  I wanted a caboose to go with it.  This is a Bachpersonn UP four wheel caboose.    A little eraser work, Glosscoat (@), Rio Grande fifty foot boxcar decals, Dullcote(@) and there it is, a bumblebee foobie caboose to go with the foobie engine.  I did subsequently take the striping off the lantern.  It looked allright from an eyeball view, but from the camera, it did not look that good.

GF's Atlas Rio Grande mogul and passenger cars are also on nineteenth century pike under construction.

Just getting over a cold (that's what I get for railfanning in the rain), so didn't do too much.  Mostly switching trucks and couplers on some older equipment.  Did purchase a few items such as a 1941 Chevy COE stakebed truck to work on.  Got 2 RSD's back from Lee and they run great.  Sent Lee 4 gons for the work he did.  He should have those today.
