Well - its that time again .. what did you do this week, modeling wise?  Too busy grading final exams from the course I teach ..

For me, I managed to make a trip to Kleins to pick up some ballast and flocking. I also picked up a box of super trees from David k. Smith..

Nothing modeling wise, but after a two night battle, I got my Alps printer working on my new computer.  I also got my photo rig setup which showed me how much junk I got on my lens through the last few months of traveling.




I'll hopefully get some lumber this weak to start some benchwork.

Brian Kuhn, aka flight2000 here at the Railwire, drove up from Ft Leavenworth on Saturday to run a few trains on the N scale Juniata Division.  Brian does some amazing modeling, and sells much of his work on eBay. His website:

Anyway, as if giving me an excuse to "play trains" for a few hours were not enough, Brian gave me a DCC-equipped Atlas Conrail U23b!  I promised to put it to work MU'd to my CR U25b.



Oh, and TODAY is not a train day.  Today I'll be brewing an American IPA using my very own Centennial hops from our garden!

Beer is good.  Homemade beer is better.

I've been building hopper car kits... I scored a good deal on some MDC WM 70 tonners.  This afternoon I'll be setting up the rolling stock to update car cards and waybills, and starting the long process of prepping the layout for an as-yet-unscheduled ops session in the fall.

The room is still a wreck after the photo shoots this summer!

There is a photo of this car on page 17 of the Milw Color Guide Volume #2. It was rebuilt in May 1964. It looked like an easy conversion for a Fox Valley Models Rib Side car and it was. The door reinforcements are styrene strips while the plating above and along side the door are adhesive backed vinyl.

My contribution for this week is two informal product review photos of the
new N scale Walthers 72' smoothside baggage cars (Walthers p/n 932-55092):





And some short comments:

Nice cars.   They come without numbers - a decal sheet for all the
road names is included with the instructions, in the proper font for
the railroad.  The Santa Fe numbers are 3555 through 3564 ( a total
of 10 different numbers, and each of these Santa Fe numbers is
repeated 4 times (i.e. there are 4 decals for #3555, for example).

Rides smoothly, no problems running it at head end of a 8 car
train, couplers look like Accumates to me, and they couple nicely with
standard Kato passenger cars couplers (both the older corrugated cars
as well as the newer Super Chief cars).

I started doing some SD60M to SD60I preliminary work using Atlas and Kato shells. I did enough to know the steps I'm going to take and that I can feel confident getting more Kato SD80 bodyshells (it's a shame they're no longer on sale). Oh, and some more planning of the layout, almost done the first level,

any idea what the AAU's are on those hops?  i used to homebrew, but stopped once i became friends with this guy....

Many thanks to Dave and his wife for having me over.  I had a great time and learned alot about the signals he uses.  Truly awesome stuff.

As a side note, I'm glad I didn't need to perform CPR after having all of that foreign power on the layout.   ;D

Steve, I have no way to measure AAUs but standard for Centennials is 9-12%.  These are first year, so I'm guessing they'll be on the milder side.

I got some foam glued down in my passenger terminal tracks.  This will be the foundation for the platforms.  Since it is just foam I did not bother taking pics of it.
