Weekend Update - 8/23/2009

Got some foam to work on a 1' by 2' bridge diorama. Before I start working on the Blacklog Valley, I want to brush up on my scenery skills. I've got a bridge and some Walthers bridge abutments I won't be using, so they're perfect candidates. I've also never made water before, so this will be a first. I need to get that practice in as I'm having a working drawbridge on the BV.

Well . . . I got the lawn mowed, and the trim around the entrance to the living room stripped of about 300 layers of paint.  I got my ears lowered . . . and installed the shelf that will be my fiddle yard.  I also managed to rebuild one of the bell cranks for my Humpyard Purveyance switch throws.  Turns out if the bellcranks isn't placed properly, the cable that is part of the HP system can't actually throw the switch.

Was released from the hospital Saturday for a blood clot in my left lung.
8 years ago I had one in my right lung that almost killed me.
Now I'm on blood thinners for the rest of my days,and have to limit my alcohol intake. :'(
I did pick up a few Walthers N 40' boxcars though.(does that count?)

First, Carl glad your able to get up and get around, like John said your lil' guy needs a railfanning partner (and to take him to the show to play with all the Thomas trains!).

Second, met up with Ed and Bryan at MBK, both are taken off my list of people that I will listen to when it comes to influencing my purchases. Then we went to lunch and had some pretty "deep" talk about the hobby. It was good times, Ed I'd be interested in bloggin' about "blending" and "perspective".

Third and final, I began working on the railroad bridge covering the underpass on the BYR, it was nice getting back into scenery. Also tweaked my Walthers 2-8-8-2 sound a hair as well as some performance CV's. Sound does make a huge difference... :-\. Additionally I familiarized myself with CombineZM as well as additional features with my camera which was pretty nifty. I continued my tie painting tests as well as perfecting my ballast technique. One of these days I'll finally paint my track!

Me? In the hour I have been able to commit to trains (besides buying things and talking about them over BBQ) I've been experimenting with a shrink ray and the stake pockets of an Atlas Trainman flatcar, also know as 'how to turn a plastic stakepocket into a pile of file shavings.' Sometimes you just have to do these things in the name of science. Kinda like Madame Curie. Nothing to show though. Perhaps literally.

Wow Carl, sorry to hear that.  Glad you're still here!  I hope thinners are an effective treatment for that.

Brian/Dave: great locos on a great layout.   That modern power looks right at home there...  (IPA, yum.)

Bill, Nice job on the MILW box.  I'm curious about the stick-on vinyl since I've never used it and always like to learn about new tricks.  What are its advantages and disadvantages compared to styrene?

Many thanks to Dave and his wife for having me over.  I had a great time and learned alot about the signals he uses.  Truly awesome stuff.

As a side note, I'm glad I didn't need to perform CPR after having all of that foreign power on the layout.   ;D

Hey Brian,

I really like your FEC power. Just visited your site and couldn't tell if you are getting out of N scale or just narrowing your focus to the FEC. What's the word? I live 10 minutes from the FEC line in South Florida, so if you need any local assistance for research purposes, don't hesitate to let me know! It is a cool railroad, nothing like seeing a long string of those red ortners.
