I just saw the new N Scale magazine and want to congratulate Lee (wm3798) on his article about his Laural Valley Lines railroad that he runs in conjunction with his Western Maryland railroad. I always like viewing his photos of his layout and the changes he has made on it. It was really good to see this in print with photos of the variation of cars he has done for the Laural Valley.

Speaking of the Laurel Valley RR, the former LV station in Ligonier is still in use.  It was once the area headquarters of the PA fish and Game Commission but I'm not sure if it still is.  It is a rather handsome structure befitting it's one time owners.  As I understand the story the LVRR was a coal hauling line that paralleled the Loyalhanna Creek through a gap in the mountains between Ligonier and Latrobe where it interchanged with the PRR.  Andrew Mellon, a wealthy Pittsburgh finacier, bought the railroad so his personal car could travel from Pittsburgh to Latrobe on th ePRR then onto his home in the Ligonier area on the LV.   Naturally a station befitting such a man of wealth was a necessity.  This was all before the automobile and particularly before US Rte 30 was completed through the same gap in the mountains.  The station would make a nice model as it is small but elegant. Best way to get there is to exit the PA turnpike at Donegal then go North on PA 711 to Ligonier.

I've seen the old Ligonier Valley RR station, and at one point started laying out a model using Atlas viaduct arches for the exterior walls.  It is very handsome, cut stone, and last time I saw it, still had the station platform covers along the side.  Naturally, it would serve as the Laurel Valley's headquarters!  Somewhere in the giant stack of stuff I've got pictures.  I'll try to dig them out tonight.

I received my copy of N Scale magazine today.  I couldn't wait, so I made a quick perusal at work this afternoon after spending most of the day in court.  All I can say is what a great article you have seemed to produce at first glance, and I can't wait until I can read the whole thing start to finish.  I didn't realize that you had so much Laurel Valley rolling stock, and they all look good in photos, too.  You should be proud of your work.

But, I have one question: Where the hell is Meyersdale?  I thought that was Ohiopyle.  WTH, man?!  I've got enough trouble building up cuts of cars in Ridgely Yard and sending them out on the road on the correct train without you renaming towns!!   ;D

Seriously, I can't wait for the next article, especially considering that you gave me a preview into the scope of that potential write-up.

That was one of those things that resulted from a little late research...  Since I was writing about the LRV interchange at Rockwood, I realized that Ohiopyle was WEST of Rockwood, so an eastbound coal train would be hard pressed to pass through a town that was on the other side of the junction!  It was easier to change the name than to rewrite history!  Plus the US 219 sign looked so kewl...

So eat a few burritos, and enjoy your time in the reading room...
