Of course if any of you out there already own samples along with a scale rule, maybe you could save me some dough and report back.

Which Preiser men (or women) would you like to have measured? Give me the Preiser stock number and I can supply the measurements. With a very few rare exceptions, I have every Preiser N scale figure set made, including many they produced for Kato, Tomix and Atlas. I also have quite a few Merten sets (all newer-issue, which are vastly improved in quality) and a smattering of Faller sets (some of which include Merten figures--I can't keep track of who has reissued what old stock any more). As for WS figures, I only have a handful of sets, for reasons already related in this thread.

These are etched brass bikes. 6 part for one bike. A friend of mine in Germany etched them for me a couple of month ago. I'll ask him if he can do it in N also.

The idea is to buy representative samples of ordinary folk from each of the well known N scale figure makers and see how they "measure up". Of course there are many facets to this (are they "clumpy" or "well proportioned"), but the initial emphasis will be on scale height.

I've seen an excellent comparison, online.  If I remember later, I'll see if I can find it again. 
There were photos, and descriptions of each major supplier of N scale figures.  They even break it down by clothing styles.

I bet the figures site is in europe somewhere - they are way ahead of us in autos (there's a great link in the scale links on railwire), so why not figures as well.

my google and alltheweb searches have been fruitless so far ...

But not being European, I could not speak intelligently on the clothing, the culture behind the figures, history of the manufacturers, etc., and I sure don't have the time to do any kind of meaningful research. It would just be a technical report on their dimensions and an evaluation of their overall quality.

We all have our little quirks. I started collecting them years ago and just never stopped. I think there's just three or four Preiser sets I don't have--very rare OOP. A couple of times I missed getting some of them on fleabay by just a day or so. I keep tabs on my collection with an Excel spreadsheet (well, there's confirmation I should be committed, I suppose).
