No, I didn't need to mill the frame. I just needed to make my own enclosure for the speaker. The one which came with the speaker (12 x 8 mm) was too high.

Nice Job Jim, that FVM is a real good likeness.  I may have to track one down after seeing yours.

FWIW, 176 had a black roof/running board and black steps.

Thanks for the information Jason.
I was going by photos from a friend’s book and those details didn’t show up but sure can be added.
The only changes I made to the FVM were to remove the etched rooftop railings which just pull out and make new ladder loops from .008” phosphor bronze wire. The paint is Badger Soo Line maroon and the yellow is Vallejo Flat Yellow.
