I have barely touched my layout for over a year, but am finally getting back it. I had a cat rampage that destroyed all the trees and damaged some buildings, so just I couldn't really look at it for a while, haha. But I started re-making trees last weekend and its starting to look more like a layout. I'll try and re-start my thread in the Layout Engineering Reports forum to help motivate me to make some good progress this winter.

@SP-Wolf Good job on the fuel tank and air tanks.  Have you got any photos of how you did it?  I did something similar to an Atlas model, but seeing yours makes me think a Life-Like would have been a better starting point.

Caleb, my cat's favorite toys are my wire tree armatures. I don't know why but she can't get enough of them. I find them strewn around the apartment when I forget to hide them.  I'm scared of what will happen when it's finally time to plant them on a layout.   

Pete, actually Atlas locos hoods have been scale width ever since the GP7/9 in 1996 when production moved to China.  Another project (that's not ready for prime time just yet) is a GP35 with a scale width hood.   

I'm not losing sleep over the height discrepancy. I never even noticed it on the GP15 until I began designing my own shell. The perfectionist in me now wants to find out what else on it is off though.   

I'll start a GP15T build thread later and go over the Atlas model with calipers while I'm at it.

Nice Job Jim, that FVM is a real good likeness.  I may have to track one down after seeing yours.

FWIW, 176 had a black roof/running board and black steps.

Wow! Those details make these units "pop"!
Below is the "Tiger Stripe" (as delivered) version with just a hint of weathering on the trucks. As you may know, these two units were assigned to helper service at San Luis Obispo in the Spring of 1953 (my modeling time frame is March/April 1953). I did this project several years ago and also did it's twin, the 5289. On both, I added lift rings, end ladders, 3 chime horn, wipers and painted the hand rails white. On the 5289, I installed a Loksound Select Micro and an 8 x 12mm Sugar Cube speaker with custom enclosure.

I personally just color match a paint to my ballast then only worry about the sides after spray painting the track and roadbed.
The relief between the rails just aren't deep enough for the usual speed methods to work well.

Thank you!! I am sorry, I didn't record the modifications to the frame. (It was a pain). This is my second attempt at these two units. My first was using the Lifelike model. The plastic frame and huge flange wheels were terrible.

Yeah, I had to model the twin "Heavy weights". As I model circa 1955 (Oxnard)- I had to go with Black Widow. Next up is painting all the details. Fun stuff.

A bit late to the party....

I couldn't resist and installed an ESU Loksound 5 micro Kato direct (58741) into a SD40-2.
This is how it looks like before the wiring of the speaker and a SMD LED which will be glued to the speaker housing.

Yeah. It's DEFINITELY a challenge. It's one of the things I like about using Unitrack to model disused track: just bury the ties and it doesn't matter. This requires much more precision.
