Is the lighting module user retrofittable, assuming the cars were made to accept them?  Or did they make a car using thicker or non-illuminated walls?

I have never seen one of those cars taken apart.
I am speculating that it is a generic lighting module and the car body is either molded from clear or translucent white plastic, with part of the decorating also printed in translucent ink, with the rest of the car painted with opaque paint.

With all the spare time at the moment and the kids' love of "challenges", wouldn't it be nice if we could get the tag gangs to accept the challenge of painting a real car side with a recognizable Kinkade painting.  Then we could run the MTL version in our modern trains.

I got one of these cars at Amherst as one of the Winterfest "pick a car of your choice" gift thinking it would light up.  I'll have to see with a flashlight if that painting area is translucent.

Maletrain:  To make it practical, how about a railroad, probably one of the regionals, starting a program to allow artists to use their cars?  Even among "taggers", there are both common vandals and true artists, and some of those artists, given the opportunity, can make a car look good.  It wouldn't have to cost the railroad anything.  Have the artist take a short safety course and sign a release, put the car on an unused siding at the company shops, blue-flag it, and let them paint.
