I gotta wonder how many different collector series MTL will eventually make up. Have they done "Legends of NASCAR" yet?

I'm surprised you haven't commented on the Thomas Kinkade paintings series. That one is even wonkier than the Solar system.   Cheesy? Yes!  But if it sells . . .

Hey, if something you came up with sold well and made profit, would you stop making it?  MTL still produces plenty of rolling stock usable for your layout.  I don't think that the collector series is hampering their non-fantasy production.

Yeah, I'm not really sure why it bothers anyone.
If that genre didn't sell, they wouldn't continue to explore and exploit it.
I mean, if you want them to make all of the relevant New Haven cars, just front your money.

Hopefully there will be a new body style introduced in conjunction with this series, so there can be a nice, jumbo tankcar for Uranus...

I figure that the foobie collectors' cars help pay the costs of development for all those dusty old freight cars I want.  Certainly, it is all those circus foobies that allowed them to bring out models of real circus flat cars, not to mention "paying the freight" for head end passenger equipment.  I would bet that they have sold a lot more baggage cars painted for Ringling Bros. than for Erie (which is what it is prototype for).

So, if the price I have to pay to have single window coaches is to see some (to me) oddball collector set in the monthly announcements, I can live with that.

And maybe the "solar system" will put enough in MT coffers for fund the tooling for that additional baggage car Joe hinted at.  And let's not forget that he also used the words "Santa Fe" (well, ok, maybe he said "AT&SF", I don't really remember) in a discussion about combines.....

That said, I would be a customer for a "Puddington Valley" single window coach.

That's a shame. While some of this stuff is kinda silly, if it gives them the cash to make some of the other cool things they do then I'm all for it.

Micro Trains does make some pretty neat  stuff. I've been collecting the farm to table series lately .

I have also collected the little 3 dome tank cars, I think I have all of them. It would be a much sadder world without the folks at Micro Trains.

The revenue from the various fantasy car series make it possible for MTL to tool prototypical models and produce prototypical schemes.  Be very thankful that the fantasy cars are still a cash cow for them so that you still get new tooling you want — such as Single Window Coaches.

Wonder what percentage of the collectors to modelers has done in the 2000's.  Seems like LHS had several standing orders for anything MT put out prior to 2000, because collectors had to have one of everything. Have heard a few stories that the collector market is way down.  For example, the State cars once sold for hundreds, now lucky to get tens of dollars.  I even had the supposedly rare Illinois and California cars, and never got any decent offers for them at train shows.

But, to the degree they are still with us, and they must be, since new collector cars come out every month, like a few others, I love them and the people who buy them, because I believe they amortize the costs for all of us.  I even recall one of those John Armstrong track planning books mentioning how runners underestimate the help collectors give us in keeping prices down.
