Warbonnets would be cool, especially leading a business car train, but would hardly be distinct from the several hundred units we continue to run today that remain in SF colors (except they'd be cleaner).

If it were just a matter of cleanliness, then a quick trip thru the wash rack would fix that right up.   But a lot (perhaps most) of the warbonnets running around today have pretty seriously deteriorated paint -- faded, peeling, pitted, and rusted.   So any freshly painted warbonnets would be quite distinct, but they are all being re-painted in H3.

If the paint schemes are too bland, maybe another approach to the heritage games would be a serious steam program.  Pick one classic loco from each of the steam-era predecessors and put them back in special service.  Even cooler, put them into regular freight service: imagine if any BNSF freight at any time might be packing steam?  That would get some attention!    

(The latter is pure fantasy, but the former is at least possible if Mr. Buffet were on board with it.)

Hyperion, opinions aside, there are quite a few schemes that could be done:
CB&Q: Blackbird, Chinese Red, Hockey stick Green, Silver, grayback (the White Fs)
GN: 2 orange and greens, Big sky Blue
SLSF (frisco): Black and Yellow, Red and White
NP: Yellow and black, and Two-tone Green
SP&S: Pullman Green (almost black) and yellow
BN: Cascade green, white face, 3 tiger stripes (black and orange, white and orange, and just white stripes), Hockey Stick (applied to Es and some Fs), and Executive
ATSF: Zebra stripe, pinstripe, Bluebonnet (blue instead of red warbonnet), Yellowbonnet (yellow instead of red warbonnet), Warbonnet, Superfleet, Kodachrome, freight warbonnet and catwhisker

So that a total of 29 different schemes, and that may be missing a few and I forget who the ATSF drew into it's system.

Granted there are quite a few still in the ATSF and BN, so maybe it could be done in the future. Gratned there may only be 7 or so.

If I'm not mistaken ATSF had a subsidiary in the Toledo, Peroia & Western and that would be a green stripe on yellow or a silver stripe on red.

Zebra would be good but a bit NS so I would say a CBQ silver, two tone NP green, BSB, BN stick, Frisco and TP&W so yeah about 6-7 depending on people who would know much more than me about the heritage of the two companies.

What about companies like the Minneapolis & St Louis? or the Chicago Great Western? who ended up with them?

Maybe we should just convince Buffet to paint the fleet in BSB

Flight2000:  If BNSF did a GN heritage unit they could very well use the BN font, as the GN used various fonts through its history.  The one you used doesn't look out of place.  Nice job!

Mark:  The only locos I have newer than 1974 are a pair of Kato SD70MACs in BNSF.  The only reason I bought them was that they looked so much like a GN unit.  One of these days, if I run out of anything else to do, I'll reletter them!

If I'm not mistaken, the green is actually NP dark passenger green, rather than GN Pullman Green, but given the variety of weathered GN greens by merger date, it still looks good.

S Class:  For CB&Q I'd prefer the Chinese Red, but then, that's all I ever saw in eastern Washington.  As for painting the fleet in BSB, the BN came close, with their Oakway lease units.  As with the SD70s, they're not "GN", but, at first glance, they looked more GN than BN.

Putting together a Bar Mills Earl's Oil for the Blacksburg crossing oNetrak module and painted some old autos for that are destined for the same module.

CNW acquired the Minneapolis & St Louis in 1960 & the Chicago Great Western in 1968
Then Uncle Borg adsorbed the CNW in 1995

Brian , that turned out to be a clean , crisp , and striking . Too bad the railroads and other businesses in a cost saving move dumb down their paint schemes today .

This is one company that never took the dumbed down route , in fact I have never seen one dirty , never ever .

Thanks, Chuck.  I'm modeling the Arizona & California coming out of Parker, AZ, but couldn't let those nice California Northern decals go to waste.  I've seen many pictures of your layout and do refer to it quite often to try and get the feel for desert scenery.

This was the exact sort of " what if"  paint scheme list I have been trying to figure out myself.  Being a modern modeler myself and a fan of sorts of the Western roads as opposed to the east  these would be great if BNSF did them, even just one or two types of each of them.  I think being who they are and the backing they have we could just see something from them.

CSX on the other hand.......good luck. They'll consider anything still in Bright Future "heritage" lol
