The New Haven used parlors and lounges all the time for half-hour commutes, from the beginning to the end.  They had coaches also of course, but they extensively used the parlors.  It was one of the few roads to have its passenger service operating in the black.

They did, however, occasionally use coaches for cabooses.

That they did, when they had caboose shortages.  That's a strange-looking site I won't be modeling.

I mentioned before about lines acquiring the Plan 3416 parlor cars and converting them to coaches... here are a few additional lines that apparently did just this...

NYC 2807 - 2845.  The only modification to the cars' exterior was adding an additional small window to the opposite side of where the parlor formerly was so that another pair of seats could be added.  The link below will take you to the floorplan of the cars which shows how they were laid out...
http://www.canadasouthern.com/caso/images/g-31-e.jpg

Both the New Haven and the NYC cars remained pretty well the same, save for the one small window that was added to the NYC cars.  The New Haven cars were rebuilt for commuter service around 1948 - 1949 with no exterior changes and very small bathrooms (see Model Railroader, May 2010 issue, page 46, the article entitled "Passenger cars with a lived-in look" to learn more about the NH cars.

Also, the article also has suggestions on how to weather and add detail to Pullman cars which could prove to be very helpful as well.

As for the N&W "PN" conversion a of 3416 parlor goes, there is only one that went to N&W and its number is not known at this type.  Other "PN" coaches were of different Pullman Plans.

I ran across a good video that illustrates my point for the need for coaches and head end cars.....

http://www.blip.tv/file/3720515

The majority of the cars in the B&O footage are head end mail and paired window coaches. There are some other videos from the same show of some other roads that show similar consists, mainly coaches and mail.

I know coaches and baggage cars would be like a license for MT to print money. I mean if they will buy 3 sleepers how many coaches would they buy?

The parlor car will work well for me in that regard, as New Haven had the prototype and I can use multiples of the model for both parlor and coach service.

Chris,
Did you catch the Erie A/C coach in the middle of the B&O train in the opening sequence?

Maybe so, but if the pricing structures continues as is, I can buy two MT cars for the price of one WOT car. My money is on MT to make something I can use. So far WOT tends toward Western and Harriman roads.

Tony,
That is a modernized coach. Erie took the Washingtonian from Pittsburgh to Cleveland.

How abaout these as options eventually...

I've seen the version built using exhisting Rivorossi and MP cars but they are dated and the Riv 12-1 isn't correct for the 6/3 sleepers actually used.

Coaches
diners
than observations

Commuter coaches would be good also!

Burlington, a little more Burlington, and then a lot more burlington...Do you see the pattern?

Thanks Jerry, I was just researching this (I missed this when it was posted) and google brought me back to it. ;)

That footage from 1900-1906 is awesome.
