Private cars used to travel everywhere, even on the back of freight trains. Many are still around, although not as far roaming as they used to be.

there are still some that can be found in the hills of Western Maryland  ;D

Has MT released any info on observation cars??  Thinking of the Conrail OCS stand-ins, of course...

I'm still researching the next 4 cars, so nothing difinitive on styles or proto's.  I considered the window painting on the GN's...but the price would have doubled with the masking...expecially trying to do something that sit in so deep (anything below mean surface level is problematic for masking equipment).  We also had some conflicting info on when that was done.  As to the lettering I believe we worked off information supplied by the GN society...but not sure since I've been distracted with new projects on the other side of the building.  I have a few that I am relettering for SP right now and roughing them up as siding queens for the time being.  Undecorated without lettering are on the way, but not until the three body styles are released.   The ink is still fresh on these so if you use some Coleman fuel, or White Gas as they call it in Virginia  ;D it should wipe right off.  We use it to clean off errors in printing and it it doesn't set too long, works well.  Otherwise, some 600 or 800 grit sandpaper and a little water and a little patience will take it right off too.  A coat of clear and you will not see where the sanding was done.

Cheers

Joe

They definitely would be good to use as a "core kit" for OCS cars, which I intend to do.  But the sides, ends, trucks and details would need a major workover.  CR 10 for example had new welded sheet metal sides.

Well... looks like Branchline has it right.  According to Tom Madden's Pullman Car Construction Records no Plan 3585 10-1-2 sleepers were acquired by Great Northern.  Probably was done by MT because they already has done the mail car.

But GN did buy two of the plan 2585 10-1-2s... just don't know off hand just how different they are from the later version.

According to Tom's records owners of the 3585s include ATSF - 10, A&WP - 1 (West Point Route), ACL - 4, B&O - 16, CN - 2, CofG - , C&NW - 4, DL&W - 3, Erie - 3, FEC - 2, GA - 1, GM&O - 2, IC - 4, LV - 2 (1 car swapped with Pullman for another for MofW after discontinuance of passenger service), L&N - 2, MKT - 1, MP - 2, NOT&M - 3 (MoPac sub.), StLB&M - 2 (MoPac sub.), NYC - 3 (for "day parlor" usage???), N&W - 2 (non-AC, MofW only), PRR - 13, RF&P - 2, RAS - 1 (carnival), SAL - 3, SBC - 6 (Mexico), SOO - 2, SP - 32 (plus 5 non-AC cars likely for MofW service), SSW - 2, T&NO - 3, SOU - 20, UP - 8, WRofA - 1 (West Point Route).

All of the SP ACed 3585s resold to Mexican railroads and and 6 cars not otherwise sold by Pullman eventually were sold to Edwards International and then sold to Mexican railroads.

I think the window arrangement is similar between the 2585 and 3585 cars, so it's probably construction techniques that changed over the years on 10-1-2's.  Like the GN 2585's may have had arched ends instead of the pedimented ends on the 3585's?

All those real road name selections for the 3585 and MTL does a foobie as the first railroad specific release?  GN must still be considered their #1 roadname seller.

According to the list Jerry posted above, it looks like SP and B&O were the two biggest users of the plan so here's hoping for a B&O release. Now I guess I need to research the paint schemes to help my cause along. If I am thinking right, the cars were painted Blue and Gray durring the conversion to A/C. Before that they were solid blue or pullman green, or both, I can't remember right now.

Question - when did we learn the MTL model is based on Plan 3585?

From the guy at branchline, referring to his own product.  Keep up, Bryan! ;D

Ah, I see.  Looks like a match to the Branchline car.  The Branchline site has thumbnail pics of their scheme, including B&O in blue/gray.  Other prototypical non-green cars include UP, PRR, LV, CNW, SAL and AWP.  I'm looking forward to this one when it appears on the MTL car, sooner than later hopefully:
