Cool video. Great to see someone with a bit more brain matter and disposable income than me experiment with sciencey stuff.

@thomasjmdavis , I finally tried to mount a thin circular saw blade on the end of my mechanical toothbrush on my Sonicare that I use for me detail sander and the results were less than stellar.  maybe the teeth (see blade above) are too coarse, but the blade kept sticking and stopping the vibration and preventing a nice straight cut.  Crap. maybe a much finer blade would doo the trick.  I did not try an abrasive disc or cut off wheel but those would be easy to snap off in a kerf.

Sigh.

Thanks John, for doing the experiment.  It strikes me, thinking about your description above, that toothbrush may have a more "random" vibration than the larger tools- those being essentially orbital sanders- so their motion is based on small rotations in one plane, where the sonic device may be moving more on the "z axis", if that makes sense.  I've been hoping to pick up a sonicare used somewhere, I should probably set up a search on eBay. Certainly worthwhile for the sanding and cut off functions you've described.

There are many different electric toothbrushes, but I'm pretty sure that my Philips Sonicare operates on a single plane.  The stem is like a pendulum.  When brush is against my teeth it swings up and down (parallel to the teeth).

If it is powerful enough (and if the saw attached to it has fine enough teeth) it should work similarly to the Rockwell Sonicrafter (or similar) vibrating power tools.

Look on places like Slick Deals, etc.  Often certain models are 50% off.  Twice I scored a mid line model (4100) for $25.  These are the better lithium ion models instead of NiMH.
