The first one i'll give you although that a modern interpretation.  The second is too simplified.

Going back a ways, by definition a gondola has sides and ends with a floor that is level (or approximately so).  This can include bottom doors.

A hopper has sloping sheets that allow for it's contents to discharge by gravity through hopper doors and as you said, modern cars are self clearing.

Yes that's all true. I was more going after the point that a solid-bottom car is definitely never called a hopper. :)

This is also not a hopper, even though it has slope sheets:

It has a solid bottom and can only be unloaded via rotary dumper.

This is a bottom-dumping ore gondola:

While technically meeting the "self-clearing" part of the definition, it's a flat-bottom car with bottom doors dumping to the sides, not hopper bays.

Right. Gondolas have level floors.  It's one of their defining characteristics.

And no one said gons can't have slope sheets.   Just that hoppers will.

Congratulations Simon!  That is great news...

How is your video car and would it be available to shoot a run across the C&W in August?  I will have the second snowshed installed then so all scenery on the second deck will be finised...it might make for a very interetsing run if the clearances aren't too tight!

Thanks, The car needs to be rebuilt, as it took a tumble a while back (I found the box of bits this morning, but I'm sure it could be made ready. I had made some improvements since the last time it ran on your layout too - it's a little lower and now has a heavier car for the battery.

Great news!  :)

Tim

Thanks, hopefully this means it's worth moving again to somewhere with a little more space!
