Umm, pretty sure the announcement will be something related to BC Rail based on what Jeff has done in the past. Assuming that is correct, maybe one of these...

http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=bcol48020&o=bcol

The first of those is already (or was) available as a Kaslo Shops kit.  The others are well off the mark according to my spies.  We should have pictures some time this weekend as the announcement is expected to be made at the PGE-BCR Modellers' "P.G.E. 100" convention in Squamish, BC.   The convention celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway which became British Columbia Railway in 1972 and BC Rail in 1984 before being taken over by CN in 2004

For those able to get to Squamish, although the banquet is fully subscribed, we will be accepting either full or day registrations at the door.  Dates are July 13 - 15 and the location is the CN Roundhouse & Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park, 39645 Government Road, Squamish, BC.  The doors are open for registrants 09:00 - 15:00 Saturday and 09:00 - 16:00 Sunday.  A public Train Show is open 10:00 - 16:00 Sunday.

As co-chairs, Tim Horton (BCR 570) and myself would be happy to see any of you there.  If you do get there, look us up.  The committee members will be readily recognizable by our bright "PGE Orange" shirts which should stand out amongst the sea of Forest Green regular convention shirts.

Cheers,

I forgot about this meet -- I'll have to see if I can make it.  Is one day better than another for a dedicated modeler, but only "casual" BC Rail fan?  ;)

Hi Gary,

From a modelling poiint of view, the Sunday presentations will probably be more interesting than Saturday.  Sunday's presentation line-up is:

10:00     Pacific GreatEastern Steam Locomotives (primarily historical)
11:00     PGE Paint & Stencil Schemes - some parts will be applicable even to an ATSF/SP modeller
13:00     BC Rail SD 40-2 Locomotives (both prototype and model)
14:00     Virtual Layout Tour - a PowerPoint presentation regarding 11 or 12 PGE/BCR/BC Rail layouts (most currently under construction)

Day registration (rather than Public Show admission) is required for access to the presentations and also gives access to the Museum.

Saturday's presentations are primarily historical:

10:00     PGE 1950s Through the Lens of the Late Wm. H. Hewlett, MMR
11:00     PGE-BCR Through the Lens of Richard Yaremko (primarily 1960s-1970s
14:00     BCR-BC Rail Through the Lens of Brian Elchlepp  (1980s-1990s)
15:00     Walking Tour of PGE Artefacts at the West Coast Railway Historical Park.

It would be great to see you there.

Cheers,

Further to Geg's comments, the NSC 50'-6" combination door boxcar is still available from Kaslo Shops as far as I am aware.  Central Hobbies carries them when they can, but they usually sell out very quickly when re-stocked.

The new products from Briggs Models will be unveiled at the show.  I will post an announcement for Jeff during the weekend if time permits, or on the Monday following if not.

Tim;

In regards to the lettering plates that are not included in the kit. I'm assuming you used .010" styrene. Is that correct? Also, are the dimentions of these plates included in the instruction or available elsewhere?

Hello Mike:

Yes, I used .010" thick styrene.  I was given two unpackaged kits for testing and product photography and have thus not seen the instructions so do not know if the plate dimensions are provided.  I will provide them here for the benefit of anyone who needs them.

For the NAR plates I referred to prototype photographs and made them out to be 6'-0" long x 2'-0" tall.  I used .156" x .010" strip styrene which is 25 scale inches wide and cut the plates 6'-0" long.

For the BCR plates I estimated them to be 14'-9" long x 4'-0" high.  The widest strip (.250") is only 36 scale inches wide so I had to cut these from .010" sheet styrene.

Good luck with your build!

Nice one, Australian jargon is different to North America. For us if it's open top and has either a solid bottom or doors it's a hopper. Ignorance is bliss....

A hopper is by definition a bottom-dumping self-clearing car.

A solid bottom car is a gondola.

I'm not sure about Australian jargon, but I do see people over here confuse their terminology all the time too and call anything that carries ore a "hopper" when it's incorrect. (Same thing with woodchip gondolas, some people can't seem to stop calling them hoppers...)

The first one i'll give you although that a modern interpretation.  The second is too simplified.

Going back a ways, by definition a gondola has sides and ends with a floor that is level (or approximately so).  This can include bottom doors.

A hopper has sloping sheets that allow for it's contents to discharge by gravity through hopper doors and as you said, modern cars are self clearing.

Indeed,  we should pin that down soon as it's a busy month for me.

Oh and I got an early present today -  new job back at EA so I can stay until xmas and it's a job that will get extended so I can now apply for PR too!

Congratulations Simon!  That is great news...

How is your video car and would it be available to shoot a run across the C&W in August?  I will have the second snowshed installed then so all scenery on the second deck will be finised...it might make for a very interetsing run if the clearances aren't too tight!
