Taking your trains to work I see?
No, that was another deal from Lowes at Christmas. 2-piece tool box. Some drawers have tools, others have trains :D

That's something I never thought to do when I was working. Ahh, the things I missed out on because of my manic depression.
Hmm... Kiz did often take

That would make a great MTL graffiti car (assuming MTL has a body style that's close enough).

These Atlas Trainman TOFC flats may not be 100% prototypical, but I like how they look after a little dressing-up. The decks are painted to look like aged wood planks, the wheel hubs have been painted to tie-in with the trailer's paint scheme, the visible mounting pins on the trailers have been removed and the corresponding holes in the deck have been filled, body-mounted couplers have been installed, the cars and trailers have been weathered, and tie-downs added. I would never have considered these had I not done a few for a friend. I liked his so well that I wanted to work up a few for myself!

This is the first HO scale structure I've completed in 15 years. This is the combination coal shed and section car shed at Rico, CO on the RGS.

What are the colors used? I'm looking for a depot color for my HOn30 rig.

It's craft paint. Americana Yellow Ochre and Americana Deco Art Espresso. I used the same yellow ochre with my Colorado Midland stuff but there I used roof brown for the trim. The RGS's trim color is a softer brown.

I use craft paints now for most of my hobby work; it's available almost anywhere, fairly inexpensive and the range of colors is quite extraordinary.

Even worse, I didn't check the pictures until I got home so I didn't take any pics of it actually sitting on its staging track where blurriness shouldn't have been an issue. But, I did make a GP15T purchase in Chessie in HO this weekend so ....

Hi Rick, The only thing I didn't see covered in your excellent article on the PRSL was how you got trains into and out of Pavonia Yard. Do all trains have to back out onto the mainline?

Funny that the two recent N scale deserters are posting their HOishness on the N scale list.
Maybe you'll let me back in the N scale forum with this post. It turns out that my five-year old daughter was a little more upset by the conveyance of the Seaboard Central 2.0 than I expected, and she has begged me for a few days now to build her a new layout, so she can run her N scale train. So, I built the table that you see underneath the HCD layout in the following picture:
The HCD table is merely temporary to allow me to test my new HO trains until I get the new layout going. I'll figure out where to put my daughter's table once I get things built. Oh, and I cheated. I hooked the N scale loop of track up to the same DCC system that the HO scale track up top is on, because I don't have two DCC systems yet. I bet that I'm the only person who can consist an N scale locomotive in an HO scale consist. :D

:?
If there's ever been an HO scale Weekend Update, I've missed it.
The Weekend Update lands in the N and Z scale forum but is scale-agnostic. I really hope folks aren't actually upset to see work in other scales on the Weekend Update. I know I enjoy them all.
-
That's my understanding: anyone is welcome to post in the Weekend Update, regardless of scale. The thread is put in the N and Z forum for exposure.

I believe the weekend update was something Richie brought over from the N scale Atlas forum when it shut down. It has always been for N scale. I'm not saying it still has to be, just saying it always has been. It doesn't upset me to see HO but it might get a little confusing sometimes.

Not quite accurate...
There's been a weekly update thread at the Railwire for as long as I can remember, even when I had my first account circa 07/08...
In fact here's an old one started by Gregg Malkov...

Building a few T-Trak modules might make an interesting father-daughter project.
They could be set up on the HCD table once the HO trains are moved to the new layout.

Exactly .. it's always been scale agnostic .. and I fondly remember when Gregg used to post here .. I always looked forward to Ritchie's steamers, the pictures he found, and everyone's contributions .. RW may have started out as a primary Nscale site, but we've drifted from G to TT to whatever that 1:100000 scale thing that DKS built ..
-
Weekend update has always been part of Railwire, I joined both the Atlas forum and here the same week circa 2005(my current profile is newer, as I got swept for a period of non-use, something I don't miss!), way back in the dark ages when you had to warn folks if your post was photo intensive!..
I have never heard anything about the weekend update being scale specific, and I understood it was hosted on the N scale page for exposure as well...
I find alienating folks due to their scale choice in poor taste. Also, some of the folks we are talking about have been some of the biggest contributors to this forum in terms of modeling vs. griping.
Speaking of which, back to the modeling..and I hope to see some in of which in multiple scales! :ashat:
-
and I fondly remember when Gregg used to post here ..
Me too, I only coresponded with him a couple times, but I miss his contributions and knowlege greatly...
Hoping now that things are settled down for me I can dedicate more time to modeling and contribute to a happy multiscale weekly update :)

For the first time in a while, I did some modeling worth while. I got a bunch of european N scale in a trade for my Z scale stuff I had that I never used anymore. In this lot, I got some passenger cars, a few freight cars, and a few locomotives. I got a fleischmann 2-10-0 that needed to be totally tore down and cleaned/oiled, as the freewheeling locomotive was seized. Another was a arnold BR212 that needed a new truck pin, An arnold 4-6-4 tank engine that didn't need any work, a fleishschmann BR614 that needed some wiring fixes and cleaning. But in the lot, was an old Lima FS E.424 locomotive, One of the REALLY old ones that were one wheel drive. I built a Scratchbuilt Mechanism for it, Using the trucks from a Fleischmann V212. It has the wrong trucks, but until I find a mechanism with the proper wheel spacing for the truck frames, this will work, and it looks convening. I need to find some longer worms for it, It aint pretty, but for now, it works.

Nice vintage Europen stuff - I like it! Was that a coreless motor I saw?

No, I wish, It's just some generic Ebay 5 pole can motor, left over from a project where I bought a bag of 5 for cheap. I remotored one of the old lifelike 0-6-0T "Little Joe" locomotives, and a little atlas Davenport switcher with the same can motors. It took some modifying of the shells, but again, it looks convening, and I'm happy with them.

It seems to me only a few posters bemoaned the fact that N scalers were changing over to HO. That wouldn't be enough to bother me. Yes, some things get under my skin, but not everything...

Please don't feel that way .

Sorry but the majority of post this week are pretty boring .
It should not be the place for a discussion of N over HO .
I usually enjoy this thread looking at a great show with a good coffee , but not today , sorry .

I can't see them either .
Oh I get it now , we need to log in to Google via the embedded link behind those icons . Not going to do that , too risky .
-
Usual Google problem - photos were visible when the post was fresh, then vanished in a couple of hours. We've been through this often enough for me to suspect Google has an algorithm determining when images are on their system primarily to be hotlinked someplace else, and shuts the door.

I don't get it those pics are in a public viewing album.

I love it. But what about stock cars? I am doing a similar train, not as big as yours, but I am including stock cars. I've got 4 50 footers from Atlas and 5 86 footers. These are the old "pig palaces". I'm using decals I bought on eBay and custom made ones for the RAS names on the car sides. No photos because I'm 1400 miles from home camping for a few weeks.
But I love what you are doing.

Tom,
Royal American only carried 1-2 stock cars and that was back in the 1940's and 1950's. I do intend to possibly add one or two. I have some old out of production 72' warren stock cars (Raintree was the company that produced them) that I will be adding so I can run the train in that time period.
After the 50's, they didn't use stocks anymore. They did use 2 AT&SF baggage cars letter for RAS for various equipment. The kato baggage cars from the El Cap set are perfect other than the lettering, so I'm trying to pick a couple of those up eventually.

You mean "green" because lack of the huge clouds NOT present OR green for the color...
It's been "green" for the last 22 years, since the complaint at that time, was it matched the backdrop color too much. (it was first painted, "blue" ) :o
Its' the OLDEST structure (27 years) on the MNSE layout. Which means it's OLDER than a lot of people, I know! :o :o

Maybe some green smoke out the stacks would help ? Everything is almost the same bright green . I tried hiding the fascia with my hand but that didn't help much . Even so I am green with envy .
I earthed up the fascia , you be the judge .

up1950s - I agree that's a LOT of Green there!!
The fascia color is the same as the FCN's. But, I just went downstairs. The FCN's looks a lot darker shade, Then what's in the photo.
The Plant/boxcars/Loco's colors are Modelflex "BN Cascade Green". The two boxcars on the "Paper #2" track, the "Darker shade" ones. Are the Original cars, that I painted some 20+ years ago.
I painted up the other 2 cars, when I gave the building a slight touchup..
As far as the fascia, You'll have to argue with the rest of the club, on that !! ;)

That's a beautiful bridge. I do have a question. Where I'm from a green light on a bridge over water denotes the center of the ship navigation channel, and the red denotes the edge of the channel and/or an obstruction, such as a bridge pier. Are the light colors on the bride correct?

Hi Rick, The only thing I didn't see covered in your excellent article on the PRSL was how you got trains into and out of Pavonia Yard. Do all trains have to back out onto the mainline?
Rich S.
Running the Camden Pavonia Yard is not for the faint of heart, it is a very busy place, but some trains do arrive pre-built from staging. I have my 3 original staging tracks (26-30 cars each) and added a 4th in a hiding place behind the viaduct (23 tank cars and a cabin). All the 3 main staging trains come out engine first so there are no problems with back-up moves there.

In the above picture, the deepwater empty hoppers would be on the rightmost track (in place of the tank cars) and the Millville loaded sand gons on the next track to the left.
Since the PRSL non-Atlantic City branches (which I model) all terminate without outside railroad connections all the trains are out and back “turns", 6 (pairs) in all to duplicate the PRSL 1954 freight schedule. Most of the locals are built on the lead into the yard and then taken out and deposited on one of the 2 mainlines ready for power to be added to the appropriate front end (via the cross-overs). Two yard leads allow the yard work to be choreographed for simultaneous use but we haven’t progressed to that point yet (only operating 3-4 times a year it is hard to remember lessons learned from one session to the next).
Dispatching a train buys time to build the next one. The day starts with the Philadelphia transfer (a chance to duplicate real life with @cbroughton ‘s RT624). It’s cars are blocked into the 4 locals (Millville, Deepwater, Salem, and the local Camden industries.

Next up is the Reading (loaded) coal drag (WY841) from staging track #2. It goes directly through Pavonia to the Atlantic City Electric power plant in Deepwater. It uses Reading RS3s (prototypical) since the Reading usually won the coal contract. It is followed by the Deepwater local (WY843) built in Pavonia.
When WY841 reaches Deepwater, it drops the loaded coal hopper on its terminus track and gathers the empty hoppers from the aforementioned dedicated Deepwater track, reverses the engines and “caboose” (Reading) on the mainline and heads back to Pavonia as WY840. Returning it runs through Pavonia and heads nose first into back into staging track 2.
Meanwhile WY33/34 the Millville “Sand Hog’ leaves staging track 3 and runs directly through Pavonia to the Millville via a different route out of Woodbury. It goes south with empty gondolas which it swaps for loaded sand gons from the dedicated Millville yard track.
Pavonia yard then builds and dispatches the Millville (WY27/26) and Salem (WY51/50) locals (the Salem local has dedicated yard tracks in Woodbury).
The end of the day sees the WY79/80 tank sweeper leaving the 4th staging track behind the viaduct. Pavonia yard supplies the power. As soon as it leaves Pavonia, the Camden local does its work (since the 4th staging track was blocking the lead to New York shipyard (the tracks in back of Camden)). It reverses at Deepwater and returns back through Pavonia back into staging track 4 (no need to worry about loads/empties with tank cars).
As you can visualize Woodbury and Westville stay busy with all the trains going one way and then the other and Woodbury possesses an icing facility (mostly pre-mechanized reefers in the early 1950s). What amazes me is that my operating crew can consistently get all this work done in about 4 hours. We go through about 15 engines, all are era and railroad accurate except for the (5) Atlas PRSL GP38s which didn’t come along until the late 1960s. Please Atlas or Fox Valley I BEG of you, make some Baldwin AS-16s!

That's a beautiful bridge. I do have a question. Where I'm from a green light on a bridge over water denotes the center of the ship navigation channel, and the red denotes the edge of the channel and/or an obstruction, such as a bridge pier. Are the light colors on the bride correct?
The persons, giving me the Marking information. Keep referring to the "Three R Rule".
I just did a quick online search and found the USCG site. There is a section on, Lateral Aids to Navigation
Lateral Aids to Navigation are generally used for well-defined channels to indicate the
route to be followed. These Aids show the sides of a navigable channel, mark junctions
and forks or splits in the channel, indicate the safe side to pass a hazard to navigation,
and mark the safe centerline on wide bodies of water.
They are used in conjunction with a conventional direction of buoyage (a local direction
of buoyage when approaching a harbor, river estuary, or other waterway from seaward).
“Red, Right, Returning”
You may have heard the phrase, “Red, Right, Returning.” This expression refers to the
fact that when returning (entering a channel from the open sea or proceeding upstream),
a boater must keep the red Aids on the right (starboard) side of the boat. These Aids
have even numbers, and the numbers should increase as you proceed inland.
When proceeding toward open water (seaward), navigate so that the green Aids are
to starboard. In this instance, you will see odd numbers on the Aids and the numbers
should decrease as you proceed toward open water (seaward).
Now I did not know this! Ya, learn something new everyday!! :D
I have two (2) cast resin, Water Buoys.
They are quite old, and have been sitting on the layout for sometime now. I packed them away, so they wont get damaged with all this reconstruction.
The trick now, will be to "Wire" them up to match the bridge lights. I will cutoff the "Molded-on" lights, And replace them with PICO-sized LEDs.. :o

Big buoys like that are not generally seen in rivers. You find them well off shore or in large harbors. Rivers will usually have flat day marks of the appropriate size and color on pilings. Those would make great loads on a barge or flatcar however.

Lateral navigation is different than bridge lighting. Search for something like "USCG Bridge Lighting Manual" and see the second page.

Guess I will be cutting apart the harness. I constructed the assembly out of styrene rod stock and shrink tubing, in case of repair.
The whole assembly was then tied to the lower bridge framework with magnet wire. It will be easier to redo the harness. Than I can attach ALL of the lights to the bridge...

Matteford Paper...

A plant painted all one color, including outbuildings, is something that happens in the real world. But the perception problem here is the green is too uniformly green everywhere. Our eyes expect to see variations, no matter how subtle, in the shades of green in different places. In this case you could paint one or more buildings completely with a lighter, faded version of green -- the plant is repainting everything but not all the buildings are done yet. And you can spray very light touches of white (or lighter green) downwards from the top of walls leaving the lower sections untouched, to represent the more weathering that happens to higher surfaces than lower ones. Smokestacks and vents would have the opposite look -- the paint gets darker the farther up the stack you go, from all the heat and/or chemical vapors its exposed to. And a light dusting with ground up black chalk added to everything would highlight some texture here and there. Nothing like black streaks or smudges, just enough to catch in some of the rough parts of the walls/roofs.

John: " : monkey, ape; also : any of a suborder (Anthropoidea) of primates that includes monkeys, apes, and humans" was basically the definition I saw on Wikipedia.
That's why I was asking, I know we have humans and at least one orangutan, but what else do we have? I'm semi-serious, as I can almost see some parrots posting here. They can have the language skills of a 5 year old child, and could certainly work a keyboard.

... the perception problem here is the green is too uniformly green everywhere. Our eyes expect to see variations, no matter how subtle, in the shades of green in different places. ...
Actually... that deep a green in paints suitable for industrial buildings (that is, cheap enough) would sun-fade in a few months. And it would be uneven, of course, depending on how much sun exposure there is or isn't in any given spot. Sure, you can use the JD green formulated for vehicles and the color would last, but at 10X the cost, or more, of an industrial building paint.
But even expensive paints like Imron are not immune. Look how badly BN's green faded through the years, causing no end of teeth-gnashing by modelers attempting to be accurate, and sparking many a debate over the "correct" BN green.
FWIW.

That all came after the era Rick models. Things really went to he11-in-a-handbasket in 1969 and 1971 when the whole city erupted into riots. During one of them, the city wear tear-gassed from helicopters. My father's family had moved out a few months before that particular riot, and returned to collect the last of their belongings the day after the gassing, but tear-gas was still heavy in the air. Their house had been the target of firebombing by the rioters, but the chicken-wire that had been nailed over the windows caused the firebombs to bounce back into the yard.

That all came after the era Rick models. Things really went to he11-in-a-handbasket in 1969 and 1971 when the whole city erupted into riots....
Not long after!
I model the very early 1950s.
I can remember in the late 50s, living in the suburbs, you would wake up many Halloween mornings and the city would be burning following Mischief Night (the night before Halloween).
Helicopters would be overhead directing fire and police efforts.
My Mom used to say that during her younger years Camden was the classy shopping district to go to.
Then they built the automobile bridges (1926 & 1957) across the Delaware and Philadelphia and their large department stores were easy to get to (no longer required a ferry ride).
Camden started a long, painful demise.
The city followed the nation into the riots period in the late 1960s.
I had an uncle who was an officer in the NJ National Guard and they were called up to provide escort to firetrucks responding to alarms.
The police were overwhelmed, so the NJ State Police augmented them for a while.
(I believe one year they actually beat out Detroit as the murder capital of the world.)
The city is fighting back. The waterfront is being rebuilt.
The battleship New Jersey is a great tour, the aquarium is first class and Rutgers University has a campus there (with a minor league baseball stadium).
New stores are building out from there.
The city is served with regular rail/subway commuter service (Patco) and new light rail service up the Delaware River to Trenton.
Campbell Soup has remained a city fixture and the city is served with the best trauma hospital in south Jersey (Cooper).
And, of course, Pavonia Yard is still the largest railroad yard in southern New Jersey, now served by parents CSX & NS.
We have seen all NS's heritage units on the old PRSL rails and engines from as far away as the west coast.
(Looks like the paint conglomerations of the early Penn Central years.)
The city has a future but the road to recovery is not an easy one due to budget restraints and their fare share of corrupt politicians.
During my modeling period, RCA was still a retail powerhouse and the JB Van Sciber (furniture) parapet building was a landmark. Now only Campbell Soup's logo still proudly flies.

Weathering is still NOT one of my better parts of n-scale. But, your suggestions WILL BE keep on file..
Thank You!!

You can try dusting a little black or dark brown chalk dust (use a large soft artist's brush) on a small building roof or part of a building's wall. Quick and easy and if you're not happy you can wipe off with a damp rag or Q-tip. You'll find it interesting, and only takes a few minutes. Weathering isn't all airbrushing and caked-on rust.

I am little late. No modeling this weekend or really in the last several weeks. On the way back home from spending the weekend down south, I did get to check out the static railroad display in Temple, TX with my son. While we were there a BNSF stack train rolled by. :D

Ryan: Idaho almost had a town named "Jackass Flat". Kellogg, Idaho, is named for the prospector who discovered the Bunker Hill silver-lead mine, which led to the founding of the town. He always claimed that he didn't find it, his burro did, by kicking a rock at him. The rock turned out to be high-grade ore, and he filed a claim.
When the town was big enough to ask for a post office, they wanted to name it "Jackass Flat", but the USPS wouldn't allow the name, so it became Kellogg. For years, and maybe still today, they had a sign saying "The town founded by a jackass, and inhabited by his descendants."

Thanks! He not quite 2 yet and it has already gone by so fast. This is the main reason I quit my job in April and took the new job that keeps me local. I was traveling to several states each month :o
The good news is: Blink three times and they are introducing you to your grandkids...
Hopefully I will be almost or semi retired by then. lol.
