These have arrived at N scale supply (the 4740 and 4700s) I just picked up 2 BN and 1 Chessie 4740. Looking forward to these and see the changes they've made.

Body mounted couplers for one (I looked at one today).

From the announcement, " All of these cars feature newly tooled roofs and hatches with etched metal roofwalks and metal grabs.  They ride on our standard FVM trucks with metal wheels and a new body mount coupler adapter."

One thing that jumped out at me from the pre-production photos was that they used the same "coupler adapter" on all of the cars vs a separate part for the PS 4740 or PS 4750

Note on the FMC 4700 and Greenville 3000 (see links in prior post), the sides of the coupler adapter line up with the bottom of the end cage.

On the PS-built cars, the sides of the adapters (at least the ones in the pre-production photos) would need to be removed to match the prototype:

I hope that wasn't supposed to be a challenge for me to draw what parts would need to be removed from the adapters shown in the pre-production photos  :D

The N&W car in the link is an HC-71, built by Roanoke Shops of N&W. These are slightly different (more ribs for one) than the Pullman built HC-70 class.

Your comment about the adaptors is correct though. :D

Possibly. N&W designed and built all of their coal hoppers. I don't know much about the covered hoppers, but I have a friend that does - will ask him sometime.

The HC-70 looks like a 4740 and the HC-71 is a 4750 with a horizontal stiffner

Yeah I was thinking that about 4740 vs 4750.

HC-70 is a 4740 built by PS

Re: HC-71, it is definitely a 4750 cuft car by N&W.

However, there were some PS 4750's that were built by USRE and NACC where I wasn't sure if these may have been "kits" built by N&W vs "clones" that had the same roof, number of ribs, end cages, etc as a PS 4750.

Of course, the main point is that the adapter shown on the pre-production 4740 or 4750 isn't a good match for a PS 4740, PS 4750, or anything that could be described as either a "clone" or a "kit"

As a side note, the original Precision Masters 4750 was based on a Richmond Tank Car prototype with different end cages that will accept the Trainworx 620 adapter with little to no modifications.

MTS has the BNSF and GNs along with a CSX, wonder if they are already sold out of the other roads or still waiting on them

Hopefully, Matt will do the Arthur Elevator cars on the 4700's. Used to see them quite a bit.

Re: HC-71, it is definitely a 4750 cuft car by N&W.

Yup.

This is to confirm that the N&W HC71 and HC71A classes were built at Roanoke using PS kits. N&W's had hatches with zig zag ribs.

NW 177001-177999 - HC71, Roanoke Blt PS Kits, Blt - 73/74
NW 178000-178500 - HC71, Roanoke Blt PS Kits, Blt - 79/80
NW 185000-185074 - HC71A, Roanoke Blt PS Kits, Blt - 1973 (HC71A has additional Round Loading Hatches built into trough hatches, dischg gates have extra bracing)
NW 178501-179000 - HC78, Roanoke Blt copies 4750, Blt - 1980 (these have "arched" roofs)

(got most of this info from a Russ Goodwin email on the NWHS mailing list)
