Spent the week making some end caps to enable me to store 2 of my 3’ T-Trak modules top to top for protection.

I also patched and touched up the modules. They were stored in our club’s storage unit (retired container) unprotected and took a beating. Our club is reducing the storage unit contents to regularly used N-Trak & T-Trak modules and these didn’t make the cut so I need to condense them and shelve them in the garage before my wife gets tired of tripping over them.

Five pieces of 1”x2” and a scrap of ½” plywood. I still have to drill the bolt holes and get 8 large wing nuts for the bolts I already have. A pair of large trash bags for the dust protection and they will be good to store.

Tangentially model railway related, but one of my buddies from Memphis is in town for a meeting for his Battletech miniature mech hobby (not Warhammer 40k but same basic idea) and he wanted to create a scenic base to display his completed mechs for the painting competition. I suggested a road crossing a train track and he liked that so off we went. I’ve been wanting to do some sort of diorama to practice scenery since it’s been so long since the last time I’ve made any. We went a little fast (made the whole thing in four hours) and worked with everything while wet (aside from the supertrees, which were all done except for the superleaf) so it’s primarily one layer. Key points I (re)learned:
1) take your time, make sure everything is neat
2) the Heki grass mats are awesome
3) the AK Muddy Terrain paint effect is a really fun tool to have added
4) dip the Supertrees completely in scenic cement before adding SuperLeaf to make sure it all sticks

But anyways, here’s the finished product sans mechs


And then adding his guys. He detailed and painted each of them. They’re technically 1:245 or so, so n scale is a bit big for them; the building fits the scale fine but I’m not sure about the train cars.

It took several weeks, but this pair of SCL F7s are in service after a retrofit of LokSound decoders, Scale Sound Systems speakers and enclosures, and custom LED lights.  I even have the hostler’s lights on the rear working.  Why?  Who knows, but I have the satisfaction knowing that they’re there.

U.P. N Scale Rotary Snowplow finished except for weathering and decals at some point hopefully.

 

I'm happy with how this turned out and hope to find time in the future to weather it some and to add some decals. The paint is close to how these plows/tenders were paint at the end of their service. Paint yours however you like.

My entry is from earlier in the week, because I am working this weekend, But I got off my butt, and did some scenery, and added some lights to my station module. I posted in the SBL thread, in Layout Engineering Reports.


I need to build more trees, scrape up, and replace the gravel driveway with something smaller, and break up the all green all the time look, but I'm pretty happy with it.


I have 3 more light poles to wire in on the other platform, and I want to light the station it's self still, but I'm happy with this progress.

I made some minor changes to the logstacker and time to put the print files up on thingiverse but first a few more images.

 

Since I was working off only a couple pictures and had no detailed dimensions there are probably errors compared to the actual Wagner Lumberjack logstacker that I'm trying to model.

 

These are large pieces of equipment in real life and fairly large in N scale but I've got detail on it that is close to the limits of even a resin printer.

With all the angles and such I learned some new things using fusion. I couldn't of designed these the first year using it. If you start using a CAD program (highly recommend Fusion) have patience, you will learn more and more as you go along.

 

Hope to get this scene finished someday but now trying to get track down on the upper and lower levels is going to take priority.

 

The sawmill scene will probably end up with only one or maybe two at the most logstackers.

N scale bug may have bitten again. I have completed the design for the Jasper station.  I removed  a few minor sections to shorten it a bit to better fit the layout space.  It will print in three sections.  Test prints underway.

I spent the last couple of weeks re-doing the track at Painted Post NY.  Back story:

When I laid out the track for this layout several years ago, I was using 1918 track charts for the Lackawanna (purchased on a CD from the ELRRHS) to determine how best to fit the track to my available space. Painted Post was the first town that I scenicked. Ron's Corollary to Ed's Law is that shortly after you build something, you will find photographic evidence that you were a wee bit off...    A few months after I 'finished' the scene, I found a photo showing a boxcar immediately adjacent to the depot. It turned out that I had misinterpreted the track chart and placed the siding too far from the depot. I thought, "Oh well, that will have to wait for another day to fix." Then about a year ago, I came across an aerial photo circa 1950 (my modeling era) that showed a second, shorter siding leading off from the first one. This was getting to be a bit much. And then during the last two op sessions, my guys informed me that the turnout into the siding was causing derailments. That was the last straw, so I have rebuilt Painted Post to better replicate its appearance circa 1950.

I still have work to do (weathering the roads and adding trees to the neighborhood, for example), but for now I can get back to projects on the work bench.

I like the log stackers - should probably get one for my Canfor mill.

The next step in my scenery campaign at Chetwynd is to add some dirt, so I went looking for some this week.  We have had rain on and off occasionally so had to wait for a dry spell.  I found some nice fine dirt outside my church:




After sifting I had a nice grade of dirt for N scale, and I like the colour:




I worked with a friend to draw a custom interior for my official car, which he printed for me:




Into the car for a test fit - a few minor adjustments are required but this is a good start:




I also began work on the staff sleeper for the museum train.  Centralia Car Shops offers the exact SP sleeper which required only the side skirts between the trucks to be removed:




The operation went well and the only remaining task is to convert the couplers to body mount:

Thanks and it is licensed under the Creative Commons - Attribution - Non-Commercial - Share Alike license for what that is worth.  I did find an eBay seller selling one of my items once and they took it down.  Not sure eBay would do anything about it if I notified them but that person was very quick to take the item down once I contacted them.

I have no problem with anyone printing for a friend that doesn't have a printer or if one pays a printing service to do the printing.  I get requests quite often to print items for people and they are welling to pay for it but at 82 I'm really selfish with my time so have to turn them down. 

Anyone on here interested in printing in these situations?  If so send me a PM and I'll put you on a list.
