Hey all! Been documenting my process on this project over on the Diesel Detailer forum, but wanted to share here as well, so... Heres a copy/paste of the posts on the progress Ive made on this so far!

"I decided that I wanted an ACCURATE Amtrak 4316. The one Kato sells has a number of inaccuracies, which I would rather not accept, so I'm working on an E8A I just happened to have on hand.

So far, I have:
-Filled in the Porthole windows
-Cut out the molded in horizontal grilles
-removed the molded on single steam generator intake and exhaust
-milled out the missing MU door and added a MU receptacle inside
-made a small dual beam headlight plate out of a piece of styrene.

I plan on:
-adding Plano etched metal Farr style grilles
-making the dual steam generator intakes and exhausts from 3mm styrene rod
-trimming away at the fuel tank skirt as much as I can
-adding an accurate 3 chime airhorn to the roof (already have several 3d printed ones from when I first gave this project a go with a LL unit several years ago)
-detailing the unit using the BLMA Ultimate E/F unit detailing set.

I have decals from Fusion Scale Graphics for the Pointless Arrow band, numbers, etc. For now, the unit has a Digitrax decoder, eventually I hope to add a LokSound decoder to add sound. This is one of my favorite unique units, and I can't wait to have it modeled accurately. Enjoy!"

"Hey all. Made some great progress on this project - it is nearly complete at this point. Wish I had seen [a post about KV Models making window and dynamic patch plates] sooner, would've made my life easier and the final product better, but I'm still overall happy with what I've done.

I installed all the roof grabs, lift rings, and an accurate M3H horn (3D printed, got a few of them from Shapeways years ago when I first gave this a shot),

shaved off the dynamic fan and fabricated and installed the dual steam generator intakes and exhausts,



then installed the nose and ladder grabs, except for where they would sit over the decals, and then primed the model to see high/low spots. I made the vertical ladder grabs from fine brass wire. As I could still see areas that needed infill and sanding, I added another round of putty and sanded again, which you can see in these pictures.







I also added a rear corner grab (also brass wire) and a rear headlight housing to the model before priming, visible in these photos.





At this stage I also built in the structure that will be under the Plano Farr Grilles. I wanted the model to have the right depth, so I built up the basic shapes with styrene to fill the channels in the shell that I carved. Once that was done, I was (mostly) satisfied with my hole infills, and shot the model with a coat of Tru Color Black, and began adding decals and the headlight splitter plate.







I need to add the decals other than the arrow to the engineer's side of the unit, trim the decal away from the numberboards, add the numbers to the numberboards, and add in the grabs over top of the decal, then seal everything with a clear coat. Once that is done, I can add in the windows again, and add the wipers and other post-paint details. I have decided I am ordering a LokSound decoder for this project, so I will install the reverse headlight when I do that, but I have already cut down the weight at the back of the locomotive to accommodate a speaker. Looking forward to wrapping this project up modeling wise and getting it running for the first time! "

As a follow up to this - for folks who have done decoder installs in Kato E8s before, do you recommend the ESU Wide Body decoder? Or should I just get a standard nano or micro and wire it up? I have no problem with either, but very little experience with the board style decoders, so I defer to the masters lol!

Hey Dennis! I just met you at the NERPM this weekend.

The Wide Body decoder is a Nano with the wiring done for you. I haven't installed one myself yet, but I'm pretty sure all the wiring you'll need to do is lights and the speaker.

Hey Gareth! Great to meet you this weekend! Gotcha, cool. I saw a couple things online where people were worried about vertical fit with the daughter board on the decoder, so I figured I'd ask. It seems like it should be great, just wanted to make sure before dropping $100 on it! Thanks!

Yes, the daughter card nano piggyback makes that decoder rather thick, but according to what I determined in https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=54278.msg773328#msg773328 Kato E and F units should have enough vertical  clearance for it. But PA1 and PB1 do not.

Good to know, thanks @peteski ! And I guess worst comes to worst, if I somehow dont wind up having the space the board could always go into an F40 or SDP40F! I'll pull together that order this week then and get it on its way!

A couple of updates from last night - I finished getting nose grabs installed, and got the rest of the decals in place.




Still need to get the decals settled snugly onto the rivet lines and seal them on, but its really coming together now. Next up - fabricating the nose lift lugs! I plan on making them out of styrene, shouldn't be too difficult. Once those are made and installed, I'll move onto the grilles and wipers.

Also - anyone have any good ideas on how best to make the MU hoses/brake and steam lines on the pilot? I know there are etched metal MU hoses out there, but they all (that Ive seen) have only 3 hoses, whereas I need 4 to include the steam line. I could try to get some super fine wire? Not sure, but looking forward to getting some ideas.

did you cut away the nose striping over the number boards, or did you just put little black oval decals on?

I carefully cut the decal away after it was on the model. Same with where the black access hatch is visible on either side. Probably could've gotten away with just some black paint, but I tend to not do things in half measures!

I think someone offered those lifting lugs as an etch at some point. Can’t remember who it was though…
