Larger Tender-Drive Steam Locos

I have worked on any number of Tyco Chattanooga and Clementine 0-8-0 / 2-8-0 steamers.  The primary problems I have encountered are excessive graphite / oil accumulations in motor housings, failed armatures, failed / overheated / collapsed brush springs, free spinning drive gears on the armature shafts, damaged gear teeth, cracked tender-drive wheels, damaged drawbar assemblies and missing traction tires.  Many of these steamers show up on eBay.

I have experienced some success on repairing the failed armatures.  The armatures often have accumulations of graphite and oil on the surface of the commutator segments.  There may also be some "erosion" of the printed circuit board substrate between one or more commutator segments.  I typically begin by cleaning up the armature.  Next, I may try to fill in the damaged areas between commutator segments with super glue.  Finally, I polish the commutator surface.  I also have to clean up the graphite brushes and springs.       

Failed brush springs are a common problem.  I often take small gadgets, appliances and electronic / computer items apart.  Sometimes there are compression springs which I can use as is or modify as needed to replace the original springs.  I have even used modified springs from some cigarette lighters. 

Many times, a motor will run OK but the small gear on the armature shaft will free spin.  I have experienced varying success reattaching the gear using either super glue or Loctite Threadlocker Red.  However, the Loctite products have become rather expensive, and I don't purchase that formulation as much as I used too.     

I have seen any number of Bachmann 4-8-4's on eBay.  The drivers are often out-of-quarter.  However, I like the appearance of the
4-8-4's.  Bowser makes a replacement kit for the drivers, but I have never purchased one of the kits.  I have a number of methods I use to repair / retore the cracked axle tubes on the drivers.  Most of the time I can get the steamers running again.  There is seldom any hope of repairing the drivers by simply providing super glue between the cracked axle tubes and the short nubs on the inside of the driver wheels.

This brings me to the purpose of this post.  I have never read much about modelers using an AHM Fairbanks-Morse C-liner, AHM BL-2 or Athearn geared F-7A diesel chassis underneath a long tender shell to power a steam locomotive.  All three of these diesels are fairly plentiful and reliable.  I have never tried using just super glue to repair the drivers on a Bachmann 4-8-4, re-quartering the drivers / gauging the flange-to-flange distance on the drivers with an NMRA gauge, removing the Bachmann motor and using an Athearn geared / flywheel-drive diesel chassis underneath a long tender shell to power the locomotive.  Given the weight of the Bachmann 4-8-4, which is considerable, I am not sure how an Athearn tender drive would perform.  However, maybe it is worth a try.  Even if it doesn't work, there might be a number of other steam locomotives (perhaps lighter) which could be used instead of a Bachmann 4-8-4.
