Low bridge?!

Two 5-unit well cars are set out alongside the CSX main in downtown Philadelphia.  Most of the top units have sustained damage.  Hard to believe there is still a low bridge someplace, but looks like someone messed up big-time!  Looks like the containers were empty. I wonder what happened to the bridge. 

I remember a truck with an above-clearance load damaging a highway bridge near DC badly enough to close that bridge.

Can you imagine the liability, if they don’t? 

As soon as I saw Philadelphia tagged to that photo, I immediately thought about the clearance projects on the Philly Sub.  As far as I know, the Howard Street tunnel is finished, but there’s a handful of other projects, e.g., bridges, that need more clearance along the line.  All I know is that I still haven’t seen a true double-stack on the Philly Sub, yet.  Admitted, I don’t really do much railfanning, though.

Maybe this was the test train. 🤣

We have a notorious low bridge at Cicero where the BRC crosses the BN main. Mains 1-3 won’t clear anything over 17-6, while mains 4 & 5 are several feet lower. It’s one of those things that “everyone knows,” but every few years someone hits it anyway. It’s in the timetable, on every GTB issued on the Chicago sub, listed as an exception on the work orders (train list) when you have anything over 17-6 in your train, and physical signs are posted in both directions.

The last time it got hit, they managed to shift the double-tracked BRC bridge enough that the belt was shut down for a couple of days. The engineer got about 12 stacks through it, all the while thinking there was something wrong with the locomotives, causing them to “surge.” He works elsewhere now.

There are also numerous low clearance underpasses on the roads below the elevated portion of the BN between Cicero and Chicago. Any time a truck strikes one, they shut the railroad down entirely until the track is inspected. DOT assesses fines to the trucking company for a bridge strike, regardless of the level of damage, from what I understand.
