I notice that there doesn't seem to be any guard rail for that trestle.

Not clear to me that it would have done much good, considering that the slug was dragging a broken tail from beyond the end of the trestle.

But, are guard rails for bridges and trestles no longer standard practice?

By guard rails, are you referring to the set of rails usually placed on the inside of bridge track?

7ideas productions did a youtube series on the Toledo Branch, and there were a couple of trestles that did not have those inner rails in the video that I noticed. There weren't any good shots of the Olalla Slough Bridge however. The line is quite old to my understanding, so there is a chance that there may not have been. Its hard to tell from photos of the wreckage.
