So they relocated the horn as part of the rebuild (this is "SD40E" #6300 I assume).

Yes.  Moving the horn away from the A/C, I guess.

Here are the tools I used for this.



Top is a small file.  Got it from Harbor Freight.   But it is for big work.

The next 4 files are mini files from a discontinued Xacto set.   If you ever see this set, buy it.   Hopefully they will bring it back one day.

File #2 is a triangular file for the corners.

File 4 is a flat file for much of the work.

File 3 is a half moon file (flat on one side and curved on the other.   It is a bit sharper on the edges than the plain flat file.

The square file at bottom is for rough work in the corners and the narrow edges. 

Lastly, there is a #11 Xacto knife.

Both GMM and JNJ used to offer All Weather Cab kits. I'm pretty sure that nobody makes them now.

You could also junk a Scaletrains SD40-2 to get the all-weather cab from it.  It comes with the right mechanism and triple clasp brakes to boot!

I finally had some time to take some quick pics of the SD50 shell that I acquired.

"Left" Side - the sill fuel tank "cutout" on this side looks "doable":


"Right" side - the sill fuel tank "cutout" on this side looks challenging  :

For the extended exhaust thing (roof), I am now considering fabricating it from sheet brass (if we can still buy that  ).

Looks more like add two fine strips of styrene than to cut out.
