Interesting. All I know is I used it to repair a couple of broken walkway rails on a Micro Trains tank car and it has held up for three years. I recommended it to Scott Teague and he used it to piece together handrails for a SD70 ACU project he built. He made one of his videos about the results and also recommended it.
I created a tool for this process. I split a 3/16" K&S brass tube. This is actually too large but it was all I had. A tube with a smaller diameter hole would be better. The handrails measure at about .5 mm. The tube is soldered onto a handle. I then cut a groove for a stanchion.
Ron, may I ask how you cut the brass tube in half? I have a moto tool with cutting disks - I am thinking that I would cut the tube with that (very carefully! ).Thanks,Mark
Did you actually use a cutoff disk to slice into the tube or did you just grid off half of the tube's diameter?
Any chance you could take a close-up photo of the repair? I'm just curious what the glue joint looks like. Was the railing exposed to any flexing after being glued? We might just have different ideas about what a good glue joint is supposed to be.
Scott Teague at NSSCOTTTEAGUE VIDEOS made two videos on this. If you go to his videos on youtube he shows the results of his work. I feel Ron's melting method will give a better appearance but if I have to repair a handrail that is no longer available as a part, I am going to be hesitant to try it. However the tool he made to align the parts is a great idea and I intend to make one. The SD50 walkway arrived and I thought I'd take photos before I cut it up.In the photo below, the top walkway is a stock SD50 production.The one below is my shortened pre-production walkway.You can see that the pre-production walkway (phase 1) is fatter and the regular production walkway (phase 2) is thinner. So if you want to build an SD50S, you need to add a strip of styrene along the edges of the walkway to make it fatter.
