Has anyone used flocking powder before?

By chance, I just came upon this stuff and it seems useful. It's for the inside of jewelry boxes and other crafty stuff like that. It's super short nylon fibers--so basically static grass. 

My Michael's has none, and my Hobby Lobby has a royal green and other unhelpful colors, but this place seems promising

I bet the brown colors would make excellent dead pine needle ground covering.  I've never come across a good static grass color that simulates that well before.

Model car people use it to add carpet to interiors and stuff like that.

I expect it would be good for simulating mowed laws, probably green layer over tan base layer.

I'm thinking a non-dirt analog for, well, dirt, and sand. The real thing is way too risky around magnets. (Yeah, I know. Unsanded grout.)

Hmm.
Flocking has been used for many years by model car builders to simulate floor carpeting.  Flocking is basically the same stuff as model RR static grass but the fibers are shorter.

More recent development in model car hobby was to use embossing powder (available from arts and crafts stores and of course online) to simulate carpeting. Some think that it produces a more realistic scale carpet look. It has a totally different texture than flicking and it might actually be better representing dead leaves and such on a model RR layout.

Good call!  I did find come nice Noch materials that gave me the colours I wanted but would still like to to find some finer textures. Etsy is difficult as the shipping to Canada is REDICULOUS. But I can search for this in other places.
