Crooked Creek - a Z scale micro layout

Crooked Creek, a small and sleepy place somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. It’s the late 70s or early 80s and the branch line still caters to the needs of local farmers and businesses. And the place is popular amongst hikers for its beautiful trails and spectacular views.

Anyway, that’s the imagined storyline behind this little layout. Its main purpose was to practise some layout building techniques and it will now be used to occasionally run a train in circles.

Are you using 120mm curves?
If so, and you want to run other power, besides the SW1500 (which like usual AZL knocks out of the park) you can use F units, GP7/9 and the GP30.
The GP38's will run too, but they have a tendency to rip cars off the track at anything less than 145mm.

Though i have to ask, where did you find the cat and dog at? Most animals i have found in Z are Deer, Moose, and cows.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! I’m chuffed but blushing at the DKS mention. His shoes are way bigger than anything I can aspire to. But I do visit his website frequently for inspiration, building techniques, and stealing ideas - fantastic stuff, really.

Yes, Rokuhan 120mm curves - ideal for these types of projects and I can confirm from my own experience that the other locos you mention do run on that radius.

The cat and dog are from www.trafofuchs.de, a small husband and wife outfit in Germany who do wonderful Z scale figures (chicken and seagulls even!). They have their standard programme but will also do custom made figures upon requests at very reasonable prices. I live in Europe, so no idea how things would work for you with the current tariff situation, but you can always contact them. Another producer of Z scale figures (all the way down to beavers and squirrels) is www.kingenhoefer.com, also from Germany.

Amazing. Incredible, actually. If someone were to make a DDA40X in Z, I would be toast. Can you imagine what I could do in the 40x44 space now occupied by an N scale project? I could model the entire US!

(Or so it would seem.)
