ICANN says the domain is available.

Thinking further...
It's unlikely that northeast.railfan.net was registered as such. Likely just railfan.net (top-level domain), which is still definitely active.

Uh oh. It was up as of 9/26/25 https://web.archive.org/web/20250801001759/http://www.northeast.railfan.net/

Looks like the photos got archived (from a quick check on a few photos).
