I am not a bot?
« on: September 11, 2025, 08:40:51 AM »
When I started my TRW visit this morning I saw a brief "We are verifying that you are not a Bot" message before I was allowed to browse.  I guess I fooled the test after all!   :D

Seriously, is this something new added to TRW site?

I saw that last night. I suspect it's not anything Tom did, rather, that his hosting provider is imposing Cloudflare or similar screening to keep the bots at bay. I have read where the "data centers" driving AI are hammering the $#!+ out of site hosts everywhere, a magnitude greater than the search engines did.

Remember when they told you to shut off the water while brushing your teeth. Now we are wasting water on AI.

Heh. That. And the reduced-flush toilets that don't swallow, and flow-restricted faucets and shower heads where it takes five minutes for the hot water to get there? Just follow the money.

But we digress. The lowly site hosting companies are having their pipes (continuing the metaphor) totally overwhelmed by the AI traffic. They have to do something.

Similar vein... my MRR'ing is being impacted by a commercial solar power project. I'll have more about that in my (very dusty!) layout thread in a couple of weeks.

AI is everywhere, yet very few people know how to use it correctly. And every company wants more AI. Even meteorology is seeing a shift from traditional numerical weather prediction models toward AI/machine-learning models. But AI is only as good as the information it's trained on.

My company has a proprietary AI engine we're encouraged to use. So far I've had it translate Teams meeting transcripts into meeting minutes (with lots of manual edits still necessary) and to have it write me a conclusions section of a tech report I'm writing (and again, heavy manual edits were required).

It's a tool that's not going away (probably ever), but the rush to embrace it without understanding it is concerning. And to @Chris333 's point, the environmental footprint is ghastly.

I just hate how they force an AI result to my Google searches. I actually have it visually blocked using Ublock origin. But it still pops up for a second before getting zapped.

I saw a post on Trainboard that the search feature was disabled because of all the AI traffic using it.

And I had to verify I was human to get this link

I actually don’t mind the AI result in Google searches, but, like Wikipedia, I take it with a grain of salt.

I watched a video where tax guys were using AI to figure out whatever the new tax code is. AI searched and reported most of what was said in the media about the tax code and not the actual tax code. Got it completely wrong. They had to go through thousands of pages to find what the new tax codes were.

This is why AI that just searches the internet does not impress me much at all.

If people are using AI that is fine with me, but I don't like me being involved with it when I never asked for it.

What I've noticed is that subtly different forms of the same question can produce contradictory responses.  Just Great!

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Youtube is making people sign in to prove you are not a bot.

If anyone else wants to block the AI overview on Google searches this is how to do it:

Just noticed after doing what is shown in the video. Before when I would highlight and right click something. It would say "search with Google". Now it says "search AI free web".
