Atlas Summer 2025 Catalog - New N Scale 53' Reefer Trailer

Lots of repaints and new schemes etc, along with a much anticipated modern 53' fluted reefer trailer:
https://download.atlasrr.com/0725MCPDF/HONSummer2025MSRPOnly1.pdf?utm_source=Atlas+Insiders+E-News+Flash&utm_campaign=80b4c6211c-Sumer2025HONConsumer&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-80b4c6211c-91601489&mc_cid=80b4c6211c&mc_eid=ca97b9f46e

The 53' fluted reefer trailer (Utility, Great Dane, Wabash etc) has been a mainstay of the intermodal trailer fleet for ~25 years now, so it's fantastic to finally have a model of one.

Another needed model crossed off many wishlists, and many many more paint schemes to come.

Re-releases include:
  • GP38-2
  • U23B
  • 40' PS-1
  • Pressureaide Covered Hoppers
  • EV Caboose
  • Trainman 50' DD Boxcar

And the HO guys get a CF7....

Nice!  The Atlas reps told me about the DRGW caboose modeled after the one still here in Springs. I’ll have to get two, one to keep clean and one to update (sans graffiti probably).

Wow, another bullseye release for me!  I can easily imagine picking up 15-20 of those trailers and maybe 1 or 2 more spine car sets.   Great selection of trailer schemes, including unlettered.

In the past year or so alone I've been "forced" to acquire 10 or more of each of the following releases: MTL NSC boxes, Aurora Greenbrier boxes, Tangent 4750 hoppers, ST BNSF reefers, IM 3281 hoppers, Atlas 3230 hoppers, Rapido centerbeams, Athearn acid tankers, and lesser quantities of the OVR scrap gons and MTL flat cars.  I don't think I can take much more of this.  Good thing I haven't retired yet....

I guess it's time to update my long-running top-5 rolling stock wish list:
1. Any rib-side 3-unit articulated 53' well car set
2. TTRX Triple-57 spine cars
3. -
4. -
5. -

Honestly, I'm tapped out at 2 now.  Indeed I could be happy with no new rolling stock releases for a year (not counting the reefers, centerbeams, and box cars due from Aurora, ST, Rapido, and Jackson Railcar).   :scared:

Gotta keep working to afford decent couplers for most of that haul! :-)

I'll pickup the B&M boxcars. Even though that's not my current era I never seem to have enough of those...

Wow. Tough to believe but I don't see anything in there that I have to have.

In N, anyway.

Those CF-7s in HO, however... Very tempting.

I was excited about that, especially the Frozen Food Express trailer; I see those on UP intermodal trains all the time.
I believe these will be Atlas' first 53' trailer models?

I also noticed they're re-re-releasing the former BLMA spine cars (especially since the last run was so short). I don't know whether I need more of these (I have two 5-units and a 3 unit) but I'm puzzled why they included container pedestals on the model when there's no way to fit any commercially-available containers on them.

I measured the pin spacing with a digital caliper and discovered that they actually line up with the Kato/ScaleTrains container pin spacing system (since they were designed years before the Atlas acquisition, I don't blame them for not being compatible with Atlas containers). Problem is, the Kato and ScaleTrains 53' containers have pins on the bottom and holes on the top.

I decided to sacrifice one of my Kato 53' containers (they're magnetic anyway so pin stacking isn't as crucial), cut off the bottom pins and drilled holes with a #62 bit in their place. The container fit perfectly over the pedestals. Now, since I dedicated one of the units of a 5-unit set to container loading (with pedestals installed and trailer hitch folded down), I can finally have a container ride on the BLMA/Atlas spine car:

Prime Intermodal and Clipper trailers for me. And another set or two of spine cars. Looking at my inventory last night, the 5 platform cars were $89.95 when they were first released. I wish I would of bought more back then.

If only that were a typo, and they were making 35' trailers instead of 53'   :D

I would have liked to have seen an undecorated option for the PS-1 boxcars as I would get 12-15 of them.

Nope. Far too new for me.

Although... Conrail (modern CSAO) did repaint it from this craziness: https://www.railpictures.net/photo/832331/ to the more appropriate scheme that Atlas did (https://www.railpictures.net/photo/846373/) at the CRHS's urging.

Yeah, that is understandable.  A lot of vestiges from our misspent youths in those announced paint schemes.

Anyway, if those weenies can do a pair of CF7's for ALY, then the least they could do is also run the pair of GP40's.  (I'd accept them even without the distinctive fading of the original blue.

Rapido has announced HO scale CF7s, too!  First one to offer one decorated for the Aberdeen & Rockfish wins!
