Can't you use soldering iron to weld it shut like MTL does for their assembled 1023 couplers?
Might be worth a try, with a small enough tip and very steady hand. Box sides are .020", so there's a very short distance 'tween "Ah!" and "Oh, crap!"
I use a thin sharp iron tip with temperature dialed down to IIRC 450 deg. F and just "kiss" the area to be welded with the tip. I've done it to the MTL Z scale couplers. Yes, it requires precision, but it is doable.
If using ESU LokPilot 5 and LokSound 5, you should be able to match them perfectly. Both types of decoders use basically the same hardware and same firmware. This includes even the special features like startup delay and Drive Hold which are tied to sound effects. If you use a non-ESU motor only decoder then matchign will likely be little more challenging, but considering the prices of LokPilot decoders, there is really no reason to go with another brand.
Have you played with this specifically? It hasn't been fool proof for me, given the various settings that are different for start up delays and other sound specific features. For F unit sets I went back to all Sound decoders, just not installing speakers on some to keep consistency.Maybe I just didn't want to spend the time tweaking everything... but it certainly wasn't easy to mix LokPilot and LokSound for me.
I must register my extreme displeasure with STC's pathetic couplers. The lids do not clip in place, which means the couplers are absolutely guaranteed to fall apart into a million pieces when you remove them (like if you want to take off the shell). And who was the pinhead who decided that having to remove the couplers in order to remove the shell was a good idea in the first place? What a giant pain in the a$$! -Mark

One more thing - don't take off the shell unless you absolutely have to. It is held in place by the coupler boxes, which are not MTL 1015-compatible. They can be removed easily enough, but an unsteady hand putting them back on? Tiny parts everywhere. I was able to reassemble the coupler box, but obviously the factory has some sort of jig or special clamp to hold the bits together when fitting them on the frame, 'cause they exploded every time I tried.I was converting to MTL TSC (1015-sized boxes) anyway, but as was mentioned previously, those require modification to fit the narrower box opening as well as mounting height correction.
Mt friend just spent 1hr 45 mins at my workbench disasembling an ST GP30A, taking out the couplers, removing the shell, installing a decoder, re-installing the shell (he decided some of the details around the trucks and coupler pockets needed to be deleted), re-assembling the couplers (using a soldering iron), then putting the body back on.Thing is, he's got FIVE MORE GP30s he has to do the same things to. His final comment: "IF I buy any more ST locos, it will be ones with decoders imstalled."
