Can anyone tell me when the CNW started using the Route of the 400 slogan on their boxcars? I see that one was serviced in 1958, but when was it painted?

I had the same question- here's what I found out... but I only searched the internet, so no guarantees.  But photos seem to indicate the scheme was in use up to 1958 (and no doubt survived on boxcars for years after).

According to an HO decal maker, the use of "400" slogan dates from at least 1941. (sorry for the huge url)

 Microscale includes them in a set for CNW slogans "1937-1958".

The only composite boxcars I can find photos of with the 400 logo are war emergency cars (ie- Pratt truss, dreadnought ends and steel doors) in the 78000 series.  BUT...CNW did have a number of USRA, or USRA clones, like the MTL car, that seemed to last forever in original form- right down to the wood door.  I assume any operating as late as 1958 was re-equipped with AB brakes, but whether they got new brakewheels or still had vertical shafts, I don't know.

As far as the slogan scheme itself goes, I don’t know when it started exactly but here is a photo from 1937 with a car that had it

That church car makes a nice, unique scenery diorama.  At least until the 5K N scalers who also think it's cool decided to do the same thing.

I love the weathered cars, but don't need any.....especially the autorack at $65.  Even at 20% off, it's $52.
