General layout lighting

Hello, Everyone.  I've been away for a long time.  Last post was in 2019, though I have lurked on the site a couple times.  Since then I have been away for almost two years.
In the last couple weeks I am getting back to reviving my railroad.  It's time to think about lighting.  I'd like to light the layout with LED strips on a valance, with dimming and fading to blue for night operations, controlled by my PC which is running my JMRI.
I can look back through all the posts over the last four or five years, but I hope if there have been any lessons learned you can point me to the threads on what to use and what to avoid.
I hope everyone has been doing well.  I enjoyed reading your lessons and adventures before and I'm looking forward to taking that back up again.  It's great to be back in the layout room!
