Folks;
Before posting, I did a search on RW to see what has been recommended in the past. Most folks were positive about the Iawata and somewhat down on Paasche. However, many of the posts are pretty dated, back to 2008 if memory serves. I was going to buy two airbrushes this month, a single action for painting track and other areas, and a double action for some finer work like engines and cars. I use acrylics entirely. So the question is - what are your recommendations for airbrushes that are currently available?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

I love my single action Paasche H for larger jobs like track.  Takes a little longer to clean, but it’s been rock solid for 20 years.

If you going for a double action air brush this video will save your self a lot of learning pain:

A great place to purchase and see what's out there.

For single actions airbrushes I use a couple of ancient Thayer & Chandler airbrushes.  They are now owned by Badger.

Single Action is easy to use and learn. Great for those solo color/finish applications

Why double action. Once you learn how to shade, you will understand.

For a double action brush.  I use an Iwata NEO CN airbrush NEW gravity feed N4500.  The cover on the cup is a nice feature, but mine is off most of the time.

Finally, the most important thing.  When you finish with your airbrush make sure it sprays clear and the needle is spotless free of any visual or tactile substance.

Thanks, wow, that Iwata Neo CN gravity feed is selling on Amazon for $66.73 today. Does that sound like the same airbrush you are talking about - that is really inexpensive for an Iwata? Always thought they were high dollar.

I have an Iwata eclipse hp-cs. Love it. Not sure why it is more than the Neo but it does everything I want it to.

I have a Tamiya airbrush, which I love: https://www.tamiya.com/english/products/74514super_fine/super_fine.htm
I have/had a Badger airbrush (200), which I'm happy to no longer be using.

I have owned a Badger 200 (single-action internal mix) for over 30 years and I find it very useful for painting models (trains, automobile airplane models, etc.)
But since it is a single-action airbrush, it is not really very useful for weathering.

For double action: I love my Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. Easy to learn. Easy to repair if needed.

Details here: https://www.iwata-airbrush.com/iwata-eclipse-hp-cs.html

Buildings & large areas are tough on the Eclipse and on the hand, so my wishlist includes a GSI/Creos Mr. Airbrush PS-290 trigger action with the 150mL cup.

Details here: https://spraygunner.com/airbrush-kits/by-type/gravity-feed/gsi-creos-mr-airbrush-procon-boy-ps-290/
and the optional cup: https://spraygunner.com/paint-cup-150ml-for-gsi/

The more expensive Iwata can spray a clean and crisp line at a slightly lower air pressure. (Very hard to detect)  Oh and features and needle size.  Paint prep is 90% of spraying application.

I've got a Paasche Talon and it's been pretty good.

My main airbrush these days is a Badger 250 single action that I got off a TRW member of some renown who had it surplus. After years of fighting Aztec airbrushes to no good end the Badger remains a breath of fresh air. I also picked on of those Harbor Freight single actions which I have yet to use but the price - back in the coupon days - was right.

If you want a thorough state of the airbrush education I highly recommend the Barbatos Rex YouTube channel. He seems to have tested everything under the sun in the last few years and he does a lot of paint tests as well.

I have more than one Iwata airbrush and the one I use the most for model painting is the least expensive of the ones I own.
It's an Iwata Neo, which at the time was listed for $89.99 at Hobby Lobby and I had a 35% coupon for any one item.
I bought it for less than $60, not including Tax.
