If you're trying to press a wheel off an axle, I would want to support the back of the wheel and press on the axle. So you need a plate with a slot for the axle to go in. The plate needs to be thin enough to fit between the wheels, but thick enough to withstand the forces on it.
Then I lucked out finding a very nice much smaller arbor press for very little money. I found it in a electronic surplus store (which has since closed). That press is perfect size for N scale tasks. The only identification I found on it is:The label on it states:Janesville Tool & MFG, INC.Milton WI, 53563608-868-4741And the side of the press has "1LP 500" molded on it.
Something like this? Doesn't quite seem to line up on the price point tho.... (sounds like you got a really good deal!)https://www.janesvilletool.com/P/2/model-ilp-500-precision-assembly-pressEd
