How does one determine if the aluminum is soft enough?  I have bar stock aluminum here and there in the basement but I don't know their grade/hardness.

How does one determine if the aluminum is soft enough?  I have bar stock aluminum here and there in the basement but I don't know their grade/hardness.

In my highly scientific (not) opinion, any aluminum will be softer than steel axle (usually axles are stainless steel).  As a non-scientific test you can take any plain nail and see if it will make a dimple in your aluminum (tap it into the aluminum using a hammer).  Plain nails use rather soft steel (or maybe even iron?).
