EMD SW1500s – Burlington Northern   



The BN’s are here! AZL is offering three road numbers:

The SW1500s feature numerous prototype specific details, traction tires, blacken metal-wheels, innovative drive train and truck design, directional-controlled LEDs and AZL’s AutoLatchTM couplers.

As a bonus, AZL’s Innovation Lab is including two adapters that allow the SW1500 to be retrofitted with Micro-TriainsTM 905 couplers.

Note: We are advising customers not to attempt to remove the shells of the SW1500s. Doing so may result in damage to the locomotive’s shells.

What is " innovative drive train and truck design" ?

With most standard designs, the truck gear tower is centered. AZL actually pushed the gear tower toward the outside axle of each truck. This allows the truck to have a greater swing, while still keeping with a motor with dual flywheels. This design is a first for AZL.

That makes sense for maximizing the distance between the truck's worms (to have more space for motor and/or flywheels).  This design was often used on N scale brass diesels, and I have also seen it on many plastic models.

From what I've observed and from some discussion from them on their m.o., it seems like AZL does their entire run all at once.   They get a shipment with their entire allotment of roadnames, and then they release them when they release them.   Might be 2 years after having them in hand.

They may like money but also don’t live in neverland.   Other importers think they can order high factory minimum production runs of one or a few roadname/paint schemes and sell them.   Think RDC, U25C/28C, and SW1.   All had excess sold on fire sale and never to be seen again.
No doubt the cost of inventory is included in the MSRP

Do they... not like money?

I think it has more to do with managing the market.  Dump them all at the same time and it creates a mess and sales at full-price suffer. (see Intermountain Z Cylindricals)  Yet they cannot get them done at a reasonable price-point if they don't order them all at once.   AZL does some head-scratching things, but I think this is probably not one of them...likely a necessary evil.

Take their looming SD40-2's for example.   Of the suggested roadnames/configurations, I'm probably in for 8-12 of them.    Harder to write a $2400 check all at once versus $400 every couple of months.  And if you don't, scumbag speculators buy up the rest and they cost you double.  AZL never sees that money, and their customers are pissed off.
