Con-Cor Rivarossi Nscale Mallet making a clicking noise

I have a DC N-scale Con-Cor/Rivarossi Mallet that runs good, but is making a light clicking or knocking noise. Seems louder in curves.  Runs smoothly on my rolling road without noise.  Running gear has been checked, cleaned and lubed.   Any additional suggestions on what to look for?

I know that on the MRC versions. the idler gears can eventually crack, even though they are quite wide.  I think the 2-8-4 used the same idler so parts are a little easier to find.

Could be a gear crack.  But ...

Check for one of the rods catching on a crankpin as it goes around.  Since the noise is worse on curves, that doesn't seem like a cracked gear to me.   I am suspecting that as the drivers slide over on the curve, a crankpin sticks out just enough for a rod to catch on it as it flies over it.  Not just the rods, but also check for the crank pins that have to run behind the crosshead.

Can you run the engine REALLY slow, so you can watch the rotations of the drivers on the curves and look for this?
Does the click happen once per driver rotation?  If it does, it's probably not a cracked idler gear.  It could still be a crack in a driver gear, though.

My Con-Cor (Rivarossi) Big Boy has metal gears. I thought that the Rivarossi Mallet would also have metal gears (I never owned one of those, so I don't have a first-hand knowledge).

Thanks for all the advice.  By the way the Mallet does have metal gears.  I think I fixed the noise with the Mallet.  The metal strip that holds the rear drive gears in place had a slight bow in it (causing extra play and letting the idler gear flop around) which I straighten.  All appears to be fine now.  Thanks again.
