Shortage of 10K 1/8 watt SM resistors for detection
« on: August 05, 2021, 02:53:30 PM »

Hi:
I have been using 10k 1/8 watt surface mount resistors on my metal wheel sets for N scale DCC detection.

Specifically I was using https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Xicon/263-10K-RC?qs=%2Fha2pyFadui8KtIYf80pRJ892dH0CQJbYndBIrS0f8U%3D

However, since Covid hit, my usual source, Mouser, has them back ordered and when they arrive only available in 5,000 item rolls. Has anyone seen these anywhere available in less than 5000 count reels?

Kind regards,
Bill

Digi-Key has several mfrs in stock with no minimum quantities.

I just did a search on the Mouser site for 10K, 1/8W, 5% and 10% tolerance SMT/SMD chip resistors and found about 20 different parts in stock with a one piece minimum order quantity.

There's always eBay... 10k ohm SMD 1206 size 1/4 watt-- I found lots of them, even from US shippers and the are not too expensive.
Is 1206 too big?  I also found 0805 size just as easily.

Interesting . . . I clicked on the Mouser  link in Bill's initial post and it brings me to a SMD1206 1/4W resistor (not 1/8 W that is in Bill's description).  It also shows 35,000 in stock!  Something doesn't add up.  But as everyone mentioned, there are multiple manufacturers, and multiple sources for SMD resistors.

EDIT:  I just checked the info in that link again and while the description at the top states 1/4W, the specs state 1/8W.

But from my experience, 1206 outline resistors are rated as 1/4W.  1206 are also rather large physically. Bill could easily get away with using smaller dimensions resistor (like 0805 0r even 0603).  Those are rated for 1/8 and 1/10 W respectively.  At 15V DCC signal on the track, the resistor would dissipate 15/10,000=0.0015W or 1.5mW.  Even 1/10W resistor is way overkill.

Bill's issue with that might be that 5000 unit minimum quantity.  Although, 5000 is "only" $50 and quite probably one would never have to order more and could possible sell some to friends to make back a little.

I haven't gotten around to adding any resistors to wheel sets for detection yet so I have no first hand experience on whether a 1206 is too big, too small or just right for attaching to axles.

Duh!  I missed the 5000 min. quantity.
But I did a search for 10k 5% SMD 1206 resistors available in "cut tape" quantity (min 1 piece) and I got 48 hits.  There are plenty of resistors at Mouser.

Here is a link to that search (it probably won't work very long).

If you're looking for immediate availability of parts, it helps to select the "in stock" filter option.

Duh!   I normally do that.  Alright, still 30 items are in stock.

Here is one for 10 cents a piece or less in quantity.
