Thinning Floquil paints
« on: June 04, 2021, 08:08:32 PM »

I have some locomotive painting projects I want to complete this weekend using my airbrush.  I have several bottles of Floquil enamels I will be using.  I purchased some Scalecoat II thinner.  What ratio of paint to thinner do I need to use with Floquil paints?  It's been years since I have used Floquil so any help is appreciated!

Are these old bottles of the solvent-based Floquil?  You confused me when you said "enamel".   I have never used any Floquil other than that old stuff, and I thin it with Xylol, which you can buy at paint stores or places like Home Depot in quart cans.  You also buy "Xylene".  If you use it, expect horrible vapors, so open lots of windows, paint outside, or use a respirator  and/or paint booth with exhaust fan.  For me, since I am only ever painting one or two pieces on the rare times I airbrush at all, I just open the windows and doors, do it in the garage, and get the heck out of there when I'm done until it has a chance to fully air out.

I assume he means the original Floquil, since a recent topic included using Scalecoat II thinner for old Floquil.  But how much thinner for spraying?

Oh!  The RATIO!  Duh.  Sorry, yes that was the question.  Well, as for me, I have used both ScaleCoat thinner and Xylol with Floquil in an airbrush, and I thin it 50/50.

Thanks Max, yes, it was the ratio I am interested in.  I did some spraying at a 2:1 ratio of paint to thinner this weekend, and that seemed to work fine.

Mike, 2:1, so 2 parts paint, 1 part thinner, so the ratio is actually  66% paint, 33% thinner?

Yes, 2/3 paint, 1/3 thinner.  I saw that ratio on some other websites for Floquil paint, and it worked great.  You could probably do 50/50 as well.
