Bachmann N HHP-8 experiences?
« on: April 05, 2021, 08:07:25 PM »
I've happened upon a used Bachmann HHP-8 (N scale) - I've always liked the looks of this engine.    Anyone have any experiences with the Bachmann model that would be helpful in evaluating and possibly fixing up a used one?      I'd use it with DCC, and would be willing to replace a decoder if need be.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

They can run well... But do take a bit of work.

1. Pilot chins are too low and catch switches. File these down a bit when installing couplers.
2. The Bachmann decoder sucks, but not so bad as to replace it. These run alone and usually at speed so what we look for in a decoder (slow speed creep, speed matching, etc) does not really apply.
3. You will probably need to re-gage the wheels.
4. You may want to change the headlights which give off a bluish tint. I was lazy and just use clear amber paint from Tamiya.
5. Paint the pantographs red as per prototype.
